For those outside Australia, Clive Palmer is well known looney tunes. He has a habit of making outlandish claims (such as the CIA is funding the Green (hippie) party purely to destabilise our coal industry), I'd be surprised if this ever sees the light of day.
No. Don't believe the hype, security is mostly theatre. How many crooks go to rob a house but then find a locked door and say "oh damn we're screwed, let's move on until we find an unlocked door"?
That's why you don't want a yappy dog. You get one that just stands there, in the dark. And then tears the throat out of the intruder once they walk around the corner in the hallway.
And then never get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet ever again...
One has to make a reasonable presentation of a serious, life threatning situation. A punch in the nose of itself would generally be insufficient.
Funny you say that, I know a guy (yes actually know him personally) who killed a man with one punch on the snoz. It wasn't the punch that killed the poor fellow but his head hitting the concrete from the fall after being knocked out instantly.
Meritocracy sounds great on paper but is terrible in terms of social consequences. It allows entrenched elites to stay entrenched and over time, removed generational mobility.
They only stay entrenched if they are still the most qualified for the role come election time. See Professional Sports for a real world example of how it works.
Are we talking 3D like Avatar, or 3D like Quake?
I can't imagine Avatar 3D being much more useful than Quake 3D since even though Quake 3D is really 2D, you can still grasp depth by moving through an object. Without knowing anything about this, I'm sure Quake technology is lot cheaper than Avatar?
Price might matter if you're buying a million jars of honey. I get a few months out of a single jar, I think that whole extra $1 is worth it to not be poisoned.
the United States -- which is, in all ways except language, as culturally distinct as most of Europe.
Well except the language, and the food... and the music, and the Arts... then of course there's the history...All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
As I said, it's fun to see the panic this has caused in the left.
Can you guys stop referring to the Dems as "the Left"? For those of outside the US, your left is more right than our right. This means in a global context the Dems should be called "the Right" and the GOP "the Far Right".
So change your number to a pay per minute number. Anyone that ask about computers simply transfer them another extension which is on indefinite hold at $99/minute.
Not sure how your bank works, but with mine (multiple banks in different countries), the password only gets you in to view info and some other minor stuff. If you actually want to move money it's a one time only two factor authentication system. Auto proxies aren't much use against this, so I guess I'll be hanging onto my billion dollars a bit longer.
He can take exception all he likes, I still think it's stupid to have a medal for being injured. And please note I don't think the people getting shot at are stupid, just the reward system that values this type of event.
Isn't it funny how all the hate and anger and lawsuits thrown at MS had pretty much zero affect on their market position, and what really made the most impact was innovation (ie the Mobile (r)evolution).
It seems to be a lost point with anti-porn nuts, that women spend so much time and money on beauty products yet they shouldn't be allowed to beautify their vaginas. You can shave your legs, pluck your eyebrows, pay $300 for a hair cut, and cover your face in paint, but by god if you touch your vagina then you're a victim.
There doesn't always have to be a victim. I'm a regular visitor of strip clubs, I get some great conversation with hot young women, a good perv and feel some titties in exchange for some cash, and the women have a far more enjoyable time and work much less hours than a lot of other jobs in exchange for showing some skin. It's entirely professional and everyone wins.
Ok I'm no physicist, but I'm assuming the only damage wouldn't be the direct impact into land? What about when something that sizes enters the atmosphere at lots of km/h? then tears across continents mid flight burning and leaving a trail of supersonic debris? And then doesn't hit land but hits water some near the North Atlantic? I'm only going on my experiences watching Bruce Willis movies, but I reckon it could be pretty messy.
I'm an Apple hater, but you are right. If you want something with global support then every other vendor sucks by comparison. (And I own a lot of Samsung hardware)
I did some work for my local school where my wife teaches and can back that up 100%. They all want the latest toys, and make whatever excuses they need to get them, but at the end of the day they are a net loss. Yeah there is some productivity gain some of the time, but the time lost because they don't work properly, have software issues, flat battery, lost/misplaced, dropped, broken, or are simply prevented from using them because of policy far, far outweighs the good.
Right now my wife can't print anything in her class because the printer is out of toner, and she isn't allowed to change it herself due to OH&S rules. There is another printer but it is restricted to some other group other teachers for some arbitrary political reason.
No

Do you ever lock the doors to your house?
No. Don't believe the hype, security is mostly theatre. How many crooks go to rob a house but then find a locked door and say "oh damn we're screwed, let's move on until we find an unlocked door"?
Couldn't they at least come up with a better name? "The Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Foundation" doesn't really roll off the tongue...
Mod up! I'm sick of this media sensationalism and all the sheep who regurgitate it ad infinitum. We live in the most prosperous time ever in human history, let's not forget that. http://ask.slashdot.org/story/13/02/21/1630208/ask-slashdot-starting-from-scratch-after-a-burglary#

This can't be true. I know from years of reading Slashdot that MS is shit at everything, and that whatever it is they do, Ubuntu is better.
No.

Someday, people are going to look back on the outsourcing mania of core competencies by MBAs over the past generation as sheerest idiocy.
I think my grandad said the same thing about transistors. You'll rue the day you ever gave up on valves he'd yell...

Yes. You get what you patent. It needs to be as general as possible without being so general that you can find prior art.
Can get a patent on "A thing that does stuff"? This should pretty much cover me for everything that is yet to be invented for the rest of time.

Landing on it isn't enough, you need to plant a flag.
