Carry a small section of fiber with you any time you go hiking... if you get lost just bury the fiber and ask the backhoe driver for help when he shows up.
So why don't we try something else...

Health Care Reform
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
The whole insurance industry for healthcare is based on a flawed premise that normal care need insurance.
Here's the car analogy... if our cars were done like healthcare:
1. Gas would cost 10$/gal at the pump for cash/credit.
2. You would pay 25$ for every time you fueled up and your car insurance company would actually pay them 3.75$/gal for the gas
3. You would pay 150$/month for this "wonderfully cheaper gas"
4. Ohh... and if you need roadside assistance you have to pay for the first 5 fully before the insurance company starts picking up the tab.
So let's go back to why health insurance is flawed. Normal healthy individuals may make 3 (annual plus 2 cold/flu) trips to the doctor in a year. I pay 218$ per month for insurance through my employer (not counting the portion they pay). This means that I am effectively paying 872$ per trip to my doctor... ok... lets let that sink in... even if you count a nurse, doctor and receptionist out front splitting it and them only seeing 3 patients per hour (rough cases might take that long) we are still talking they would be making 1.74 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR EACH! Now if you have any friends that are medical professionals I bet you know that there are VERY few that are making that much per year... especially receptionists:)
Now the argument is that "well this money helps balance out all the catastrophic claims"... fine then why are we using insurance for non-catastrophic claims? I have home owners insurance in case a tornado takes my house out but I don't run my water-softener salt or home improvement projects through the insurance company.
Why when it comes to health insurance do we loose the common sense that the more people that touch the money the more we have to pay for the same service.
Leave insurance for catastrophic claims and lets get rid of the day-to-day shenanigans. This should quell a lot of the issues in the industry and make it so that people could pay for what they need instead of padding peoples pockets for day-to-day necessities.
He had already asked 3 questions... Kerry was just talking about those. Kerry was trying to calm the crowd at best... not doing anything to rectify an injustice going on in front of his face.
Sorry I missed reading your traffic intersection part of the comment....
Here is my reply to that:
The TRAFFIC law specifically states that you must follow the guidance of an officer of the law when you are in a vehicle on public roadways. That is part of TRAFFIC law. An officer of the law can not come up to you at any moment that you are just standing in a public sitatuation and tell you to "Get on the ground" without first having a warrant for your arrest or stating that you are under arrest for "probable cause of committing a crime". When a cop pulls your over they have probable cause and can investigate they sitatation. If the cop feels at any time during an "investigation" that you are endangering him/herself or the public they can also put you under restraint and use necessary force.
There was no probably cause of a crime, no investigation of a crime, there was no public endangerment, the cops were just heavy handed and STUPID!
It's only "resisting arrest" if they are arresting you for something. Not once (at least from the 3 camera feeds I have seen) did they verbally ask him to "Please leave the auditorium" or "Come with us". They instantly went to a physical response.
He was at worst a heckler... he should have been dealt with by turning the mic off and a funny response from Kerry... nothing more unless he attempted to endanger or harm someone else. The first amendment specifically states that all peaceful gatherings are covered under it and until the cops started getting physical there was NOTHING endangering or "unpeaceful" about this meeting.
Um... excuse me... but cops or not. If someone is forcefully restraining me against my will and I have done NOTHING illegal to deserve it then you better bet I am going to resist.
The guy was a heckler... he should have been dealt with as such. He even said outright that he would leave... but they never asked him to. They instantly went to brute force tactics.
A state university, public property, public forum and every bit a 1st amendment issue... NOT something that should have been dealt with by force without a HUGE amount of diplomacy first.
I would hope in this day we would be able to resist arrest for unlawful reasons. Every bit of what he did was making a scene and yes he was a complete buttwipe... but every bit of what he did was also covered 100% by the first amendment.
It's a sad day when someone heckling can be taken down with force by a police department.
Kerry just went down 200 notches in my mind by not calling those cops out for what they did right then and there.
Not sure your exact meaning of authentication cache... however if you are talking http authentication (Popup login password window brought on by.htaccess or such) then I know that it can be done with the web developer plugin in Firefox.
Miscellaneous -> Clear Private Data -> HTTP Authentication
It should be a quick trip through their code to find out how they did it and make a little plugin of your own to do it for you.
In fact... while you are in there grab the code that lets it clear session cookies and run that at the same time also. That will kill ANY authorization system they have been in for 99.999% of the web.
I remember the first time I played through the Seventh Guest... and then not long later Phantasmagoria.
I dare you to find anyone that played those late at night that wasn't at least a little scared. The environment on those two games... especially with the sound was just creepy.
Even some of the Myst ones had some creepy moments in them. Not near those other two though.
I hate to say it... but the only way we can truly give up our "love affair with cars" is if the country shrinks.
I live in a rural area... and yes I do bike to work. However, there are some mornings that 35 minutes of biking can't replace the 12 minutes of driving. (Yes... I can hold 20+mph on a bike)
I would love to live in an area with mass transit... but I hate cities and thus a small conflict appears. I would love to ride my bike every day... but time and Michigan weather prohibit that quite often. I would love to use an all electric vehicle... but even though I am next to a nuclear electric facility half of my power still comes for a coal fired death belching electric plant so my vehicle would still be $$$ to run and killing the environment.
I think my only real hope is that someday here my boss will let me telecommute.
Something I've never understood about the creationist approach to this discussion: Why does the theory need a complete step by step explanation of everything? There's no significant evidence that opposes evolution. It just doesn't paint a complete picture of everything. Likewise, geologists aren't wrong about everything because they can't give you the history of every rock in a mountain formation. Their general theories haven't been contradicted, so how is it that the inability to produce detailed information on one topic weakens a theory irreparably?
In my experience it is because that is the level which the anti-religious types expect of them... a step by step explanation (with proof). There's no significant evidence that opposes religion either. I will freely admit that evolution in some form exists. How many staunch evolutionists have you heard make that same statement about God?
The two are not mutually exclusive... and the pissing match is getting real old.
Since you say I have a cartoonish notion of the platypus I decided to check your accuracy and being open minded read up quite a few scientific articles about them. (I am talking serious journals here... not National Geographic).
#1 Although the platypoda's bill does not open it's external structure is listed as having a "... rubbery snout that are more reminiscent of a duck's" (Wikipedia). Thus the name often given "duck billed platypus" which actually is only the specific name for one species. [ Knew that ]
#2 Males are venomous but the venom is not similar to the normal style of venom a mammal produces [ knew the venomous... didn't know it was different style ]
#3 It's closest true "relative" is the echidna which is also a monotreme [knew that]
#4 Most features such as ear location, gate and skeletal makeup more resemble a reptiles. [knew that]
#5 Platypoda have 10 sex chromosomes unlike the 2 of most mammals [ didn't know that]
Well... until you get into obtuse research I seem to have a fairly good grasp.
You have to admit it... an animal that doesn't even have a passing resemblence to it's closest genetic family (echnidas) and hasn't for 100+ million years (according to scientists... not me), and is that genetically screwy really does stretch the theories.
The comments made were made to speak to the IQ that they were replying to...
Notice how I said that there was no way that a beaver and a duck just "got it on" one day and that got us this animal.
However, you have to admit that an animal that exhibits characteristics from so many branches of the tree which in 99.9% of the cases are exclusively found in one branch is pretty hard to explain.
I mean... This is like a cousin species of humans that had a feathers and gills... you would look at it and go "Wow... that's odd!"
Also, I am not a biologist... I am a programmer/sys admin... I'll leave the heavy biology to the scientists.
I wasn't aware that science was ever trying to falsify God's existence, something that every scientists will readily admit. What science can do is explain things that were traditionally explained in terms of deities. As to living our lives the best we can, I agree, but what does that have to do with evolution?
I agree... most scientists do not present it that way. I was speaking to the general population on Slashdot that seem to think that the two can't exist together in any way shape or form. Every religious thing posted on here gets loads of comments about "Flying spaghetti monster" or such... and evolution ones get comments of "see... we are right"...
You know how few people I have seen on here that are willing to entertain the fact that there might be a God... I guess it is because of the high concentration of tech-types and technology lends itself to "everything has a precise explanation" thinking. Which... in the field of computers I applaud... but in life in general you have to be a bit broader minded.
God or no God... they should be good to their fellow man... and quit the pissing match!:P
Big bang and evolution are both leading scientific theories which explain the progression of nothingness to what we know today. As such they are linked.
Or are you saying that different fields of science require as different belief systems as different religions do?
And you sir are saying I said things that I didn't... I never said the 2 were a link... I asked plain and outright which they evolved from.
As I said... we know that a duck and a beaver didn't just get together one day and "get it on"...
But it is sure hard to explain how on earth that creature evolved
Did it evolve and then partially de-evolve... and then evolved up another tree?
Anyways... I keep an open mind... you obviously arn't.
as to your final note... #1 profanity doesn't become you #2 God doesn't send anyone to hell... they choose it. God has always been about free will and it's awful hard to say that "Love one another" is a too harsh of a rule to follow. #3 I use my brain... but I am NOT a biologist... I am a programmer/sys admin. If I get some of the science wrong it's because that isn't my field of study... as it is probably not yours either
I don't beleive in large scale evolution because it's just plain insane.
Heck... scientists can't even create a single celled lifeform from basic chemistry... and they can control the environment for their expirements... try thousands of permutations... etc....
Either life came about because of God... or because of the biggest crapshoot ever.
It's all built on a premise of "well... this exists... so it started somehow... but we can't show you how yet"... what does that sound like to you...
Just compare these statements and realize how both of them are just built on beliefs.
Religion: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Evolution: "The big bang happened billions of years ago... and several seconds after that all the natural laws came into place"
Religion: "The earth was without form and void" Science: "The original cells were created within a primordial soup"
Anyways... my main point was... GIVE UP THE PISSING MATCH... NEITHER OF YOU CAN EVER PROVE IT YOURSELVES!!!!
Either evolve into a super-being, wave hi to God when he comes, or just plain die.
And you sir would be short sighted... Read the article. The article itself states that the record is very sparse and only includes facial bones/teeth.
Where did the tail come from... the webbed feet... where did it pick up laying eggs? Did it evolve from something like a duck... or something like a beaver?
I mean... come on... it's not like a beaver and a duck decided one day to "get it on" and voila... That's a pretty messed up animal.
No matter how many sources you point to there are still quite a few animals that just flat out defy explanation by evolution. Even with creationism the platypus can only really be explained by God having a sense of humor.
Either way... the point is... STOP THE PISSING MATCH!!!! NEITHER SIDE CAN WIN BY ARGUING!!!!!
Either evolve into a supreme almighty yourself... wave hello to God when He comes... or DIE...
Personally... I still think that macro-evolution has quite a few holes in it.
For instance... where the #$@#$ did platypuses come from? We have found "precursors" to modern man... but I see people like that every day at Walmart. It's called genetic defects. Anyways... back to the platypuses... has anyone ever found a single fossil record of any precursor?
Another good one is... why is the gene that determines eye color in humans the exact same in frogs... yet does absolutely nothing in them. I mean... the RNA in a virus has 90% of what it takes genetically to make a human. Sure sounds like some kind of pre-design to me. I mean... when is the last time you saw a programmer take typing tutorial program and turn it into a photoshop killer?
Now... that said... evolution at least on a small scale does happen. Look at the round-up resistant plants... or the anti-biotic resistant bacteria.
Anyways... science can't disprove God... and religion types can't prove God... everyone just needs to quit this pissing match and live their lives the best way they can.

There is a LARGE difference between "I'll answer his question" and "Please let him stay until he has his answer"
The first is an automatic response to any tough/strange/stupid question made to a politician. The second is stating his disapproval for the situation.
Um... excuse me... but cops or not. If someone is forcefully restraining me against my will and I have done NOTHING illegal to deserve it then you better bet I am going to resist.
