I see lots of myths posted here. Both Jpeg2000 and RAW support EXIF metadata. Not all implimentions do though. Paint Shop Pro screwed Jpeg 2000 up for example which they call.jp2. Jpeg2000 and RAW serve two different purposes. RAW allows you to adjust the temperature of the image without image loss at a later date etc. With Jpeg or Tiff format you have to set it in the camera. Jpeg 2000 offers both lossy and losseless options. Canon RAW is currently the most popular RAW format so I'm guessing if Adobe can't convince Canon they will lose this battle. If they can get the camera manufactures on board they will win.
You need to use wxPython 2.4.2 as the latest wxPython won't work because of the name change from wxWindows to wxWidgets. Thanks to MS. This bug will be fixed someday.

I have the Canon 10D and it only goes up to ISO 1600. Yes, it has mirror lock up and works great. Also goes up to 30 second exposure or bulb with a cable release I think but have not tried it. Great camera!
Installing peripherals like flash card readers, scanners, printers, digital cameras etc. USB doesn't work like it does in Windows. When I plug something in Linux should detect it and start up some intelligent install wizard. I still can't get my Belkin USB 2.0 Multi-Card reader to work and can't find any help on-line anywhere.
RH 7.3 Gnome is not very stable. I have to reboot as often as I did Windows 98 because everything locks up. Nautilus is particularly bad.
Applications like GIMP need more work. Things like remembering the last directory I opened the last time I used it. Remembering what compression I like to save JPEGs at. Not erasing EXIF metadata etc.
Why isn't there a JVM for the GBA? It's almost as if the new MIDP 2.0 specification was designed for the GBA. It's probably a marketing restriction by Nintendo. They don't want others to make games for the GBA.
This will be a huge boon for client side development. Complex, error prone dynamic HTML/JavaScript web apps can now be replaced with Java Web Start client side applications which are easy to deploy and provide Applet like security to run untrusted code. OS X ships with Java. Now we just need Sun to create an easy to install Java VM, plug-in, and Web Start for Linux. I'm guessing less than 10% of all Linux users have taken the time to install Java Web Start and the Java Plug-in. Also, Java developers will someday be able to use a modern version of Java for Applets and C++ developers can switch to Java for all but the most CPU intensive apps. Swing has made huge improvements in speed. I hear Java is faster than Windows Forms for.Net.

I've always thought that Java on the fastest x86 OS ever made would be an amazing combination. I wish them luck. Right now OSX is the only OS that come fully equipped with the latest JVM, plug-ins, Java WebStart etc. Java on Linux is a joke. Installing Java, the plug-ins, and Java WebStart is a pain. As a result most Linux users don't have all three installed. Sun's distro for Linux needs some serious work. Just search the newsgroups for questions about installing Java. Sun needs to work better with other companies to make Java on the desktop a reality.
Java on the client will experience a rebirth in the next few years for the following reasons:
- Computers are almost fast enough for GUI apps and this will only get better.
- Improvements in the JVMs, libraries, Java Web Start etc.
- Renewed interest in Java with J2ME on the PDAs, cell phones etc.
In terms of processor speed I think wireless devices are only 2-3 years behind desktops. Java is just now starting to become fast enough for medium sized desktop applications (Try running JEdit on a high end machine and you will be impressed) so in 2-3 years java on wireless should be ok for just about anything.
What is preventing developers from using Java or C# and how fast of a processor would be required to run an application the size of Office? People say Java is too slow for OTS software. What if everyone had a 100 GHz chip? It won't be long. I noticed Adobe has a Java version of Acrobat Reader for OSX.
I heard from an apple rep that OS X has one of the fastest JVMs available and offers OS X Look and Feel. New machines also come with Java Web Start. Is Java on a new OS X machine fast enough to replace C or C++? If not, it must be getting pretty close.
Canon makes a SLR camera (EOS 3) that can track eye movement and focus on that point. The viewfinder is divided into 45 squares. Whatever square you are looking at is the one it will focus on. Why can't they make goggles that do the same thing for monitors?

It would be great if the entire surface of a smart card was a video display. It could easily replace a PDA and you could stick it in your wallet.
Also, I'd love to have a nautical chart and topo map in a 16x20 foldable clothlike material with touch screen controls for zoom and pan.
All the Atari games have been ported to Applets.

Get by with what you have for one more year then switch to Java, opimize your code, and throw more hardware at it.

It's just a matter of time.

Sun's on-line Java Docs need to add User Comments similar to PHP.net. They also need a link for each method to example code.

Does anyone know if Java will run on Play Station 3?
It won't be long before hardware is 100x faster than it is now. Speed will no longer be a topic of discussion for any language.
