The artical states that the BBC has been working on the project for some time. They are now looking for outside contributions because they believe the software may have wider applications than the initial scope.
Since when has the patent office been rejecting software patents because they did not have time to properly review them? It seems like once a week that we have another story about some bogus patent that clearly has prior art. This is precisely why EFF has their patent busting operation.
Our property tax is not any higher than MA. We do have one 8.5% "sales" tax on hotels, meals and rental cars (I'm not positive about the last one). The primary reason our taxes are so low is we have a small population that does not require the same level of services as more populous states. It really surprised me that no one call Howard Dean on his claim that he provided health care from VT residents so he could do it for the US. Comparing a small rural state with low unemployment and no big city poverty with the US on the whole doesn't hold up.
When I lived in Houston, the shuttle and 747 landed at Ellington Field. They allowed the public to tour the plane while it was there. As I was leaving the 747 from the aft door, I looked up at the mounting post and saw the label. I had to have my girlfriend read it as well just to make sure I was not seeing things.
A lot of Microsoft revenue has always come from very sketchy licensing policies. I don't see why this new twist should surprise anybody. It's just more typical behavior from monopoly.
Well Rambus shouldn't have won their case either. Many judges don't have a sufficient understanding of technlogy to judge some of the cases. I agree that it is unlikely that SCO will prevail, but it's not impossible.
My small company is in the process of doing just what you describe. We are only working with vendors that will allow live demos of their packages. It it taking a lot of time to work through the packages, but we have already disqualified two vendors in the demo step. Initialy they looked very good. However, after some "real world" use, major flaws were exposed. We feel the time is well spent before buying some package and regreting it.
As others mentioned venting into the wall is a bad idea. But, the real concern is the US$19.95 price. If you order in the next ten minutes, we'll even through in a free drill bit...
You missed Stop All Production
You should be assessed a -5 for using synergistic. This is Slashdot, not office bingo.
For comments like this there should be a scary modifier.

It should not take too many more quarters like this to put an end to this nonsense.

Am I only one that finds ironic that California is not one of the states trying to ban teaching evolution in schools?

The article says that the attack did not come from the Blaster Worm. I am not sure if I believe this.

Cool work, but this guy has way too much time on his hands.
