Welcome to the Harvard School of Business. Where the share holder, not the customer, is always right. Where "Employees are our most important expendable asset" is the rule of thumb. Where layoffs are the shortcut to profitability and big returns in stock options and bonuses for CEO's.
Face the facts people!
Employees are a comodity. They are subject to the law of supply and demand.
When demand is high and supply is low, our value rises.
With Low demand and a high supply, our value plummets.
You know, High School Economics Class! Or did you sleep through that too!
Stop yer bitchn! Develop a new skill thats in demand and go back to work!
That is the new way of things!
We've gotton a bit lazy with the economy being a little too good!
The First Amendment isn't worth jack when you voluntarily give up that right when joining a private organization.
What is the difference between a private school and a private club? Not much!
You pay to get in.
You play by their rules (read that "give up certain rights")
You get something in return that is generally unavailable from public institutions or unacceptable.
Private clubs and schools are ways to "exclude" a group of people and not suffer legal repercussions. You agreed to play by their rules regardless of their legality or fairness. Better yet you paid them for this privilege!

In 7 years I have yet to work with a consultant or firm that wasn't trying to accomplish the following.
1. Find ways to Create more work for themselves.
2. Find ways to bill more hours per consultant
3. Place more consultants.
4. Operate under a self-preservation methodology.
I recently worked on a LARGE project. 1800+ employees and consultants with consultants from at least 10 different firms. The consultants ended up in management positions over company employees. Talk about a living hell. Contract management loved to get employees fired over stupid stuff and replace them with contractors from their firm. Self serving chumps!
I have worked with one and only one consultant that performed as promised. He hit all the requirements, timelines, budget restrictions and documented it all.
Consultants have a poor track record at best!
You can get the latest medical, drug, and procedure research available over the internet. Almost all the medical journals are available in a full-text searchable database.
If you are going for it you might as well include the kitchen sink!
My relationship with Ovid is one as a former employee. I get no kick back for this.
All software of this kind must spend time "learing" what the hosts brainwave patterens are for different "events". Without the ability to single out and tag the specific brainwave patteren that indicates "paying attention" the software is worthless. I worked on a GUI for a piece of software like this 4 or 5 years ago. The software built a "map" of the brain with pattern to event relationships. After a LONG LONG LONG period of training you could type slowly without using the keyboard or your fingers! Kind of fun. Too slow and too inaccurate to be useful.
This paper relies on cold blooded dinosaurs. The theory that dinosaurs were cold blooded has not been proven. The theory that they were warm blooded hasn't been proven either. Theories need not be accurate. They are just extrapolations from a reasonable amount of evidence. The FACT being they don't have enough evidence to prove anything!
This paper is basically political posturing by scientists for funding. It has no reasonable foundation other than to get media attention. Besides it's a research paper, NOT a published theory!
Finally someone hits the nail on the head! Too bad someone is not willing to do a http://Consumerreports.org test
"Where can I get -credible- data to prove which is better?" If you don't have access to the information that Apache kills IIS, how do you know that it is, in fact, better?
Yes this has been done before and is nothing new! Star Bridge Systems has had a comercial product available for about 2 years now.
Here is a blurb from the technology section on their page
http://www.starbridgesystems.com/
Star Bridge Systems, Inc. is a leading pioneer in the development of the new paradigm of reconfigurable computing. In basic terms, reconfigurable computing combines the speed of hardware with the flexibility of software. The company believes its reconfigurable computers are capable of performing a wide range of computing tasks at a high speed in an extraordinarily small amount of hardware. We believe these features have never before been combined in a single computing system. The company expects them to become available soon in scalable form adaptable for a wide range of applications across the entire spectrum of information technology and electronics. Most products with a chip inside, from embedded applications for consumer electronics and home appliances to free-standing supercomputers, are expected to benefit from the company's technology advances. This web page contains an overview of the basic technology that the company believes will transform the hardwired, ASIC-based computing paradigm of today into the reconfigurable, FPGA-based computing paradigm of tomorrow. Included is a summary of technology breakthroughs that we believe will make this possible.

The techno-elite are young. We grow up and get wise.
I am one of these elitists that you claim is selfish and arrogant.
I admit. At times I am arrogant and selfish. I was written off by the educational system. I was labeled as retarded or slow. I was never "popular", had glasses, pimples, long greasy hair, social outcast, and grew up in the 70's.
I am older and wiser now!
I now have a BS in Information Systems and Management. It took 10 years to achieve!
I'm married and have adopted children.
I work for an engineering firm designing wireless networking hardware.
You say "Big deal!".
I have worked hard. Harder than 98% of you out there.
I have a learning disability and have busted my ass all my life to learn a trade and how to be a part of "society". I have taken my place in "society" as a productive, caring and contributing citizen and more. And just think your generation had written me off as retarded and slow and of no worth.
I think you have mislabeled self confidence and pride in ones accomplishments as arrogance!
Yes I can be arrogant. I have a right to be! I have worked hard! Really hard!
I think you are afraid of "the next generation".
We have watched and learned.
We will be the ones in power.
We will be the ones making and passing laws and controlling your destiny when you are too old and crippled to wipe your own but!
You have taught us well. Through your own intolerance and impatience.
I live in an area where two large institutions are merging. There have been IT layoffs and a general exodus of IT professionals. The IT market is saturated with highly skilled and experienced people willing to work for.70 to.80 cents on the dollar just to get a job.

Lines of code are no different in principle than the tools used to cut a beam that is used in a bridge to cross a stream.
Really good software comes from people with problem solving skills, not coding skills!!.

There are only two things that can destroy a nation.
Peace. & Prosperity
Without conflict we become lazy and placid.
Be careful
