  1. The American Public does not care. on Wired Releases Full Text of AT&T NSA Document · · Score: 1

The only way that the American public would actually care about this case is if the NSA was sharing the data with the IRS. Then you might here a public outcry. All those ebay sells listed on your tax return?

  2. Re:look at numbers... on Can Peer-To-Peer Finance Work? · · Score: 1

Why not do both. As the money is paid back every month put it in a money market account. Corus bank and GMAC is paying 4.74 that will get you $1250. Of course the best option would be to just reinvest the proceeds back into another 10% prosper loan. That way at the end of 3 years you will have $1300.

  4. Re:Money in action on Can Peer-To-Peer Finance Work? · · Score: 1

I'm collecting Statistics on Prosper.com by web scraping the data. Check out http://www.savagenumber.com/ for stats.

7.32-.5 is still 6.82% return. Better most money market accounts and this rate is usually reserver for AA borrowers who tend to have a 0.2% default rate. So if you have say $25000 and invest $50 in $1000 AA loans at 7.32% (again the lowest common rate) you are looking at an expected return of 6.62%

Of course the loans with the best payoff appear to Be 'D' rated loans. They're rate is about 20% with a default rate of 6.2% giving you a 15.3% return (16.2-.5-6.2 = 15.3%) Now go to your financial advisor and ask what are the chances of having a return of 15.3% return after fees with a potential upside of 19.5%.

  5. I'm a lender on Prosper.com on Can Peer-To-Peer Finance Work? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm in for $2500 so far and I've had very positive experience. I've already had one loan paid back in full and all but one of 29 (15 of which has had a payment due) loans has not paid. I'm getting an average 14% return.
Prosper does a lot of the credit checks for each loan. Beyond the credit score they track current lates and 90 day lates in the last 7 years on people's credit report.
If the loan does turn out to be a deadbeat the loan gets turned over to a collection agency and Prosper handles the paperwork involved to ding the person's credit.
Prosper also allows you to spread your risk by investing small amounts(no less than $50) into lots of loans.
Why should banks be the only ones getting 10-15% returns on loans.
Lenders are also starting to form informal groups (some are invitation only) where they research the borrowers and score them for the high risk high return loans.
I'm also collecting stats at http://www.savagenumber.com./

  7. You know why she's bitchin on Hilary Rosen Gripes About iPod, iTMS · · Score: 1

You know why she's bitchin. As long as the DRM market is based on two different file formats the defacto mp3 standard still lives. I believe they figure that when 90% of the online music market is compatible as far as DRM music goes it will make the whole mp3 format more outlawish. Maybe sue digital music player companies because that still support mp3, ogg and any other non-DRM format.

  8. Prices may drop as well. on Distribution of Wealth in a Robot-Driven World · · Score: 1

Marshall brain makes one major error. He assumes all gains in productivity go directly to the shareholders. If there is a large amount of available capital. (which there will be in Marshall's world.) Then when a business is hugely profitable or hugely inefficient competitors will enter the market and thus will drive down prices. (see walmart). So yes jobs will be eliminated. But also prices will be driven down making everything more afordable. So those who still have jobs will find that they are wealthier and buy more stuff (or work less) thus creating jobs.

  9. How would this translate to getting a job on Henri Poole of Affero On Online Trust · · Score: 2, Insightful

This all sounds interesting. However what would be really useful is a way to translate this to a resume. The number of years in a certain language does not really translate well to being a good fit for a position. If working on open source projects and building a lot of OS Karma would help people get jobs then you would see a big rise in the quality and effort of open source projects.

Also this is/was an economic war mostly. The guy who has the most cash * 'willingness to die' wins. We overpowered their 'willingness to die' with our cash. End of story.
