Trying to market computers based on what the box looks like, not what's in the box.... you would think that they would learn.
Sometimes in business image is everything. Why do most companies give their secretaries flat screen monitors? A regular monitor is cheaper and can do the same things that a flat screen monitor can, but the appearance is what they are looking for, it is impressive. Apple's product has some flaws, but the hardware inside was not too shabby. They just did a piss poor job marketing it. They also should have found a way to lower the price. But to say that selling something based on its look is wrong, take the VW Beetle for example.
The wonderful thing about OS X is that one does not have to know anything about UNIX to use it. The reason that non-UNIX people don't like it is because there is not really any software ported yet. UNIX people love it based on the fact that they can use the UNIX shell and can compile most of their favorite software. Once companies start releasing OS X versions of their software, then it will attract more non-UNIX users.
There are a couple of things that are "dumbed down" in the new OS, for example the root account is not accessable without some tricks, but they encourage other utilities such as sudo. Also, it would have been nice if they would have put an X-Windows system standard in the OS, but that will probably come in time.
A math professor asked me once if Cauchy, a mathematician who wrote over 700 papers, would have been able to write all of those papers if television would have been around back then.
I don't think so. But if you were to replace television in that question with computers, then I would say yes, in fact he could have done more. The internet is not as addicting as television, but a computer is a good tool, we just need to learn how to use it for a tool instead of as a pasttime.
Years ago when I was in high school, my parents used a radical technique to track my whereabouts and educational progress. Get this, they used to ask me!
The thing that scares me is our President and his history with big business. One of the things that he has been slipping with is the energy crisis. Lack of power in California, rising gas prices, and he has done shit about it.
I am not going to be suprised if he even helps Microsoft some how with their split. This guy is all about helping the big guy and shitting on the little guy.
British intelligence officers have developed a rather worrying tendency of forgetting that they are carrying a computer, leaving a trail littered with lost laptops.
The British Defense Ministry has reported 205 laptops missing since 1997 -- most of which contained classified information. That's an average of 51 lost laptops per year.
Right from the article. Which word do you see more, lost or stolen? Do you get off on writing inane shit when you haven't read the fucking article?
Actually, the point was that high school students can take care of equipment better than the employees of the British government. The fact that porn or a term paper is not as important as classified material makes the case even stronger.
A local high school that gave 3000 students laptops just reported that none were missing and 12 were damaged. These are just punk high school students. How is it that they can keep track of such things, but government officials can't! I mean as an excuse the students can say "my computer was stolen, so I don't have my homework!" What the does the official say? "I am a huge jack-ass and left my computer on a bus."
Sounded good until the word Lisp showed up. There is nothing worse in life than programming in a functional programming language (except maybe a logical one (prolog))
Actually I understand what you mean, in the "real" world companies use MS and that is not really going to change. If you are in charge of a place with a large number of users, then you need windows people. On the other hand, I was hired at a place that is (mostly) MS driven, but only because I knew Linux. Any Linux person can learn the MS software in a reasonable amount of time. On the other hand, teaching a windows person how to do anything with unix is not as easy.
I have saved a lot of money for my company just by saying "Linux on an older computer can solve this." If you do not have anyone on hand with more knowlegde than MS, that sort of a solution doesn't exist, instead they would have to buy a new computer that can support the lastest version of NT (or the equivalent at the time), a license, the software, etc.
In our software engineering class this was discussed.
But what this really sounds like is integrating a programming contest into software engineering. For programming contests students use all of the tricks that Professors hate, so it is good that we can hack for a class:-)
I am sure that once in a while that a BMW will not work properly also, not to say that a Mac is a BMW, but there are always extreme cases. On the other hand, there is no comparison between the "crash rate," Windows is the king of crash.
At our school's "library lab" the iMacs that they have are pieces of shit too, but that is becuase they have retards setting them up (and using them).
RISC vs. CISC. The chips are totally different, a 400 G3 is comparable to a much faster Intel chip.
Celerons are crap, but more than that, Windows sucks, but then again everyone knows that. The funny thing is when people look at me and laugh at my Mac, I ask them the last time that their computer crashed, then they shutup.

The way that Apple makes money is by selling hardware. It is true though that it does run like crap even on newer computers. But eventually when the old computers filter themselves out, the OS will run smooth.
One thing that I don't like about OS X is the root account is not active right off the start. They are afraid that if traditional MAC users are able to change/etc/motd, then the system will crash or something.
Believe it or not, but at the main radar center for Buffalo they are using a 50 year old UNIVAC. They work by the motto "if isn't broke, don't fix it."
And from what I was told, that location was one of the most "advanced."
The only scary thing about the whole place what the fact that in the machine room there was a pc running windows 3.1!
Last semester our seminar course was based on Computing history. Let me tell you that it was the worst thing that I ever had to sit through in my entire life!
I ended up talking about the history of super computers, which was not that bad, but most of the people decided to talk on people like Babbage, Turing, etc.
He made us hate the Gungans (for some just Jar-Jar), Ducks, and Midgets. Wait...take that back, midgets are awesome!!!

talent pool for MS software
that would be like the valedictorian at the school for the mentally retarded.

I like the prank last year, when they changed all of the fonts for every article. This one was carried out pretty good, but is a little too much!

tool.
That would explain why the matrix was such a success. It is the best of both worlds.

Big waste of time!
Theorems and Theories...not the same thing.
The Mexicans should just steal the software. Who is going to stop them?
