Five Years of KDE

· Score: 0
I hate to sound like I am pro-microsoft, but this analogy does not really work. In the five years that KDE has been around, a lot of the GUI technology was there to be based on. Besides Apple's GUI, Microsoft didn't really have anything to work from, hence their innovation crap.
A better comparison would be to explain the changes in windows during the same time period. For example, they went from Windows 95 to Windows ME, which is pretty shitty. Now XP is an improvement, but once again they are a monopolistic company and KDE is an open source project.
there was a MacAmp for a time but it sucked. Sound Jam was a commercial product that worked very well, but once apple released iTunes, Sound Jam was no longer needed.
It is nice to see that more Windows apps are going to be ported to Linux. There is a market for Linux, and these software companies need to start realizing this.
there is no doubt that these individuals have extreme intellect and I agree that this stuff is really cool, however, the point that was being stressed is that some of these languages are very...different. One in particular, INTERCAL was created to be unlike others. The reason for developing such a language is the same reason hackers right viruses, becuase they can.
Software engineering is a course based around a lot of people working on a large programs. I strongly believe in no group work for the majority of classes, to ensure that you know what the hell you are doing, but in *real life* groups are used, and working in groups should be a part of some courses.
Besides, working well with others is a skill that many computer science types lack! We could use the help.
Actually the school that I attend is also entering into the same sort of policy, however it varies from Professor to Professor. For example, in one class, it is illegal to see someone else's code, you can talk about it if you need help, but no code viewing. Another professor says that viewing the code is ok, but having print outs of the code is bad.
Personally I think that no one should be allowed to view another person's code. It is in the academic world, and there are always going to be slackers who have to cheat to get by, which pisses people off who actually bust their ass to get done on time.
What is the matter with you? Do you realize how stupid you sound? It is about time that they stood up for themselves? Let me get this straight; some terrorists kill thousands of people and you commend them on it?
The yahoo article has Bush's name, by the way, even though the other articles do not mention his name, remember that he is the President and their boss, so the decision still reflects upon him.
This sounds about right. Most of the Colleges around the country have switched to Java for their programming courses. I disagree with that decision though, becuase it is really easy to make the switch from C++ to Java, but vice-versa is not so easy.
Beowulf Clusters are not that hard to build. the only differnce between building an 18 node cluster and a 4 node cluster is the number of computers. If you have the hardware, some free time, and the patience, then setting one up is not that hard. The hard part is actually doing something with one. Programming in MPI and PVM is not an easy task even with a degree in CS (unless you have no life). Check out Beowulf.org for more info.
Does this guy know the difference between RISC and CISC? Comparing the two processor speeds straight up is foolish. He should go and take a first year CS Computer Hardware course.
If a non-unix person wants a good computer without the bull shit of blue screens, then a mac is the way to go. Since apple started having different colored cases, how many PC companies started changing their cases? Have you seen a compaq lately? Wait until Windows XP comes out, its elementary school looking interface makes OS X look even better.
To boycott MS is not that easy. For example the company I work for uses third party software for its sales. When this software company tells us that its product needs to be upgraded and it will only support the latest version of Windows, then we are forced to upgrade. Unless a lot of smaller software companies start to spend just as much effort to port to Linux, MacOS, etc. then and only then will people start to break away from Windows.
Until these businesses can function without Windows, then MS will continue to use dirty business practices.
Outlook 2002 is so strict now, that remotely syncing a palm pilot is really hard to do. You have to accept a number of "do you want to do this" type messages, when before you could go on vacation and dialup to sync your palm, now someone has to be at the machine to accept the sync. This is a big pain in the ass.
The fact that ".exe" can not be opened is a good thing for the general idiot MS Office users, but to the advanced user it is a little too much.
That makes sense, but even the ship that the emperor used in Jedi was not as cool as the Queen's ship in episode I. Granted, he was evil and everything, but even villans have awesome items, for example (back to Star Trek) the Romulan ships look much cooler than the Federation ships, and they were using cloaking on a regular basis, where the federation had a treaty stating that they couldn't use cloaking devices.
All of this geek talk is making me thirsty, Jolt anyone?
One of the things that has always been a little funny is that the new ship will look better than the original enterprise. This is done in movies all of the time. For example, in Star Wars episode I, the ship that was used in the movie from Naboo was a lot nicer than anything from the previous three movies made. I know that the special effects was not then what it is now, but have some historical integrity (if there can be such a thing is a sci fi show/movie).
If they were to make a movie about the 1970s now, I would bet that they would not use a 2000 car in it.

I wonder if some of these languages don't fall under at least one of the 4 programming models. They should make up one more, the dumb languages.
you answered your own question. It is a Unix derived OS, which means that to do anything malicious, one has to logon as root.

I am sad to say that I am on the other side of the river, such a sad city compared to your side.
What is the matter with you? Do you realize how stupid you sound? It is about time that they stood up for themselves? Let me get this straight; some terrorists kill thousands of people and you commend them on it?
I am also from Niagara Falls and all of the bridges are up and running except for the Whirlpool bridge, which noone uses anyway.

Linux is written in C, and it doesn't have this problem?
Something to think about ...
Cluster: A computer consisting of many smaller computers. A cluster acts like ONE computer.
Network: A group of computers connected together for data communication, not necessarily acting like one machine.
Go to Beowulf.org for more information.

Once a month? While Windows does suck, once a year sounds more like it.

It is also about the price tag. There is no need to charge $579.00 for Office XP, that is just a rip off.
Will this machine use Crisco and sandpaper as it starts to age?
"Are you trying to say that Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?"
I thought that the German's made the best cars?
