  1. Degree in Medieval History and Philosophy? on Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina Announces Bid For White House · · Score: 1

The fact that she received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and medieval history from Stanford University in 1976 and then realized she was unemployable speaks volumes. Granted she went on to receive a more marketable education, but it doesn't help change my impression of her. Seriously? Medieval history? Who does this? It's like a bad joke.

  2. Things I AM worried about on How Much Should You Worry About an Arctic Methane Bomb? · · Score: 0

Top five things I am worried about: 1. Will my employer let me go or reduce me to the "new" 30 hour work week. 2. Is my health insurance premium going to go through the roof. 3. Is gasoline going to climb above $5 usd again. 4. Will Detroit's bankruptcy affect me. (I live in the evil suburbs.) 5. Will there be traffic on the way home today. Things I am not worried about: That's a pretty long list, but Methane bombs are definitely in there somewhere. Seriously, we can all come up with things that are way more important in the REAL world to worry about.

  3. Alarm of some sort first on Ask Slashdot: Starting From Scratch After a Burglary? · · Score: 1

If you don't invest in some sort of security system, you are setting yourself up to be robbed again. A common tactic for burglars is to hit a house again a month or so later and steal all the "new" toys people purchased with insurance money.

  4. Gun Control = DRM on Blocking Gun Laws With Patents · · Score: 5, Insightful

In terms most /. readers can understand, Gun control has very similar problems to DRM. It solves a minute percentage of the problem, affects almost none of the people it was intended to (criminals/pirates) and serves only to inconvenience the law abiding citizen. Passing gun control legislation has a nice "feel good" factor, ie "Do it for the children!", but in fact does squat to actually diminish any gun related crime at all. I give you the infamous "Crime Bill" passed in the 90's as exhibit A.

  5. Obligatory on NASA Snaps New Photo of Incoming Asteroid · · Score: 0

I, for one, welcome our new Minecraft overlords.

  6. Re:Phew... on World Emissions of Carbon Dioxide Outpace Worst-Case Scenario · · Score: 0

I am convinced there is climate change. I am not convinced it is man made. I agree it is prudent to do something just in case it is man made with one caveat. I think it is idiotic to destroy our economy in an attempt to reverse or stop climate change when China and India aren't on board. Get them to control their emissions to at least where we are now before you start enacting a bunch of environmental restrictions that will undoubtedly hurt the US economy.

  7. Re:"it's not crime" - it's informal parallel tax on Interview With a Convicted 419 Scammer · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Am I the only one that's bothered by the fact h00manist used commas and apostrophes but didn't bother to capitalize anywhere it would be required? I suppose maybe it's just his/her "style". Just hurts my brain to read it.

  9. Apple really doesn't have a choice on Metadata In Arizona Public Records Can't Be Withheld · · Score: -1, Offtopic

They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Look at recent outcry's over the Pepsi "pick up chicks" app or the "shaken baby" app. They may be tasteless but Apple let them through their "closed" system and caught hell for it. As a company they are really left with little choice but to somewhat sensor the material to mitigate lawsuits from "offended persons". If those apps made the grade, I shudder to think what drivel didn't. I don't like it, but I understand it.
