  1. Re:Did Microsoft bother... on Microsoft Caught Rigging ZD Net Poll · · Score: 0, Redundant

According to the original article some did. Most of the votes came from an internal Microsoft email titled "STOP AND VOTE FOR .NET" though.

It's funny how the ZDNet script blocked multiple votes, but some people moronicly kept on trying to submit votes. One guy tried 228 (!) times!

  3. Re:100:1 ? I don't think so... on ZeoSync Makes Claim of Compression Breakthrough · · Score: 1

It doesn't work like that. When you compress a bitstream you always take something out, even in lossless compression algorhythms.

The information you are taking out is actually "stored" in the decoding algorhythm, i.e. you need to know how to decode the compressed bitstream to get back to the original data.

Basically you need to devise an algorhythm which stores information which is common to most "likely" files, so you can take away a lot of it from the original bitstream.

Of course your algorhythm will not work for all bitstreams, therefore you will always need to simply store some bitstreams.

If (and it's a BIG if) those people found a very good algorhythm, then, yes they can achieve 100:1 compression (and even recompress their own files). Of course, you need to take their statements with a bit of salt. You will probably get 100:1 on some specific non bullshit case, and much less in the general case.

I've looked up the technical info on their site and it doesn't look like bloatware to me.

  4. Re:Cowards on More News And Links On Yesterday's Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1

The world is so damn ungrateful. Who rebuilt the world after WW/II? Who immediately sends aid to every country -- even our enemies -- when there is a natural disaster? Who does the rest of the country run to when something hard needs to be done (Iraq, Bosnia)?

This is simply ridiculous. Having the cash doesn't mean being innocent. You think the US are the only country helping other countries? This is false. The world is not only the US. You have to understand this.

Also, may I remember that the US are still keeping Iraq on embargo while Iraqi children die of illnesses which could be cured? Is that caring for your enemies?

    Unbelievable.

I am appalled by your post. The crime perpetuated yesterday is against the world, not the US. Why should you limit yourself to what happens on US territory? How blind can you be?

As for the thousands dead being innocent civilians, well, you are right. But NATO forces did not discriminate between civilans and army people in their "international police" actions, either...

You really think that Americans have any more right than terrorists to kill innocent people?
If you think so, you put yourself at the same level of the terrorists. And this is really sad.

Killing innocent people in the name of self proclaimed justice is a cowardly act. It's not justice, it's stupid, unfulfilling vengeance.

    Everything IMHO.

  6. Re:Bynari Software has Linux Outlook/Exchange supp on KOffice 1.1 Rolls Out · · Score: 1

"TradeClient" Linux mail client does not support exchange - actually I think that's the difference with the non GPL ($$$) version.
I know Exchange can have a POP/SMTP gateway (in fact we use the SMTP gateway). We don't use those extensions though, because (according to my sysadmin) they suck and they are insecure. So as I say there is no "free" client for exchange... so I'm stuck with a Windows workstation... (although I do develop on Linux ;-P)

    Cheers

  7. What about Exchange? on KOffice 1.1 Rolls Out · · Score: 1

If I have to read email from my "office" suite, I can easily do that from any platform.
If I have to write dox, spreadsheets or presentations, I'm pretty sure I can find some common format to exchange data between platforms.
But the real problem for me (and for many likewise) is the total lack of any support for M$ Exchange server (calendar, contacts, etc...)
AFAIK there is no client available for Linux which is OpenSource or GNU (otherwise I'll stick to the original, thanks)... And this is why I still can't swap to Linux on my workstation, I am required to use Exchange by the firm I work for.
Now a feature like that would mean something is changing, i.e. that regardless of minifeatures or looks, you can have a fully integrated linux workstation in a windows network.

Actually I quite liked Ultima VIII.
Although it was different from the previous chapters, it had a very nice atmosphere. Also the GFX where gorgeous for the time. They also did a very interesting work in the soundtrack dept.
I thought the UU series was crap though, that's why I didn't mentioned it.
I don't think EA didn't give enough money, I think it was 2 factors that screwed up Ultima:
    - Lack of ideas (for how long could they go on like that??)
    - Moving from a "small" company to corporate world, too big a budget, too many restraints, too many heads...

    Just my 2c.

I really hope he won't screw up this time. Ultima IX was, to put it mildly, terrible! Also Ultima On Line would have been good, if it hadn't been full of PK's...
With a smaller company, I hope (and in this sense the news of the acquisition are bad news), the Garriot brothers will find the hope and inspiration to produce some more masterworks like Ultima IV - VIII.
