Use a rack with a glass door (i.e., that kind you would use with your stereo system). Insulate the rack with sound absorbing material and build a sound trap to all ventilation holes. This is what's been done at all the radio stations that I have visited since their computers really need to be quiet.

It's not that hard engineering task. Sound proof cases have been build for much louder and hotter machinery than PC's.

Scandinavian countries have State Church. You're made a member when you're born, but you can resign from it at the age of 18.

Actually, you're a member of the church only if your parents belong to the church, at least in Finland. There are two 'state churches', which means that those religious organisations have the right to collect taxes (via government). As an atheist I must admit though that I am not too knowledgeable on these religious issues.

I wonder what the situation is in Sweden, Norway and Denmark? Separation of church and state has been an on going debate for decades and I believe at least Sweden has taken some steps. Am I misinformed?

Yep, this is news from the Linus' former home. Just in case someone only happens to think of islamic countries when they hear of 'state religion'.

And the interface is not standardized - a car may have from two to five different foot controls (at least gas and brake, maybe also clutch, parking brake, and high-beam switch), the shifter for an automatic transmission can be on the steering column or the floor, the headlight switch can be on the directional signal switch or on the dash..

Just compare the modern vehicles with the really non-standardized ones from the olden days. Today you have a standard steering wheel, gas pedal always on the right side etc.

Ever tried an old motorcycle which has gas on the left side? Makes riding kind of interesting...

I really am somewhat ignorant in the history of the U.S. But the way that left-wing thinkers, homosexuals or people of color were treated in the U.S. before WW II makes me believe that I would not have liked to live there at that time.

So those without the power to personally enforce their freedom have none? Sounds quite cynical to me. Is there really no room for any humanitarian ideology in the U.S.?

Well, it depends which countries you count as "more developed Western nations". Hasn't Sweden already made a decision to provide free broadband access to every citizen? Finland is likely to follow. Of course these countries could be described as "even more developed Eastern nations", but I wouldn't recommed using the word "Eastern" around here. At least if any skinheads with baseball bats happened to be within hearing distance...

I think English certainly is likely to remain the lingua franca, since there are so many Americans online and most of them don't speak any foreign language. So when we need to communicate with them the use of (broken) English is unavoidable.

Anyway, I think it's kind of cute when Americans try to pronounce Linux with a Finnish accent, since that's my mother tongue.

It is claimed that when sex ratio is closer to 50/50 the community tends to function better and be less aggressive. I have no evidence for this, but maybe it's worth trying when possible.

This does not mean that I am against all-male geek communities per se.
