VA's mistake had nothing to do with the basic businees model. Simply put during the IPO craze they got greedy. Had they been willing to work for years to make a solid business and a good living they would be doing fine with it. Simply put they tried to get rich quick and that almost never works. You will notice on common thing of all the companies/people on my list is that they have all started small and built themselves up over time (or are in the process of doing that). VA tried to start big which was a big mistake.

You are right selling Linux is most likely not a good idea but selling hardware and servicing that hardware is a *very* good idea. The basic concept behind the Netwinder was not flawed. It would seem the implementation was though.

Then you should do what I did before I stopped buying any games that don't come from the good folks over at Loki. Simply put don't buy a game untill you see the review from someone you trust. Back in the day that was PC Gamer or a good friend. Think about it if you see that a movie has no previews for reviewers odds are you are not going to go see it on opening day and you are going to get what you deserve if you do. Same thing with games wait a while till it is done (ie. patched.) Then buy it apply the patch that you knew you would have to when you bought it and have fun. Till then play Falconseye.

It sounds to me like the MySql AB people are going way overboard on this one.

No the BSD license does not make as much sense as the GPL in this case. And I like the BSD license for many things. The problem with the BSD license in a situation like this is that it lets others use your code without so much as a please. This could be very bad for someone like this and give say Microsoft a real club to use against them. The GPL on the other hand means that you have to compete with them on things other than the code and I think these guys will really shine in backing up code that they know and understand better than anyone out there.

This book had one bit of advice that has helped me. Having said that I'm far from making a living at my consultant jobs but it pays for DSL and some new hardware every once in a while.
It was this get a stack of business cards then find salesmen in your area who do not have any conflict of interests with what you are doing, take them out to lunch give them some cards and mention that you pay %10 commision on any jobs.
While I know that I don't have the marketing skills to make a go of it full time using this hint from this book has given me a pretty fun and profitable part time job. All in all it is a pretty good book.

Your later point get close. The simple fact is that spam is a social and economic problem not a technical one. Now of course all mail servers out there should be secured well but that is not about spam but rather just about good general security procedures. The reason blocking it at the server is not the best idea is because at that point it has already done it's worst damage it has already used up bandwidth storage space cycles etc. Blocking it at the server just reduces the irriation factor. Granted that is why I use procmail but what it comes down to is that blocking on the server is an ugly and bad solution to the problem. It can help but it is *not* the solution. The solution is legal, social, and economic. And of course the MTA is *not* the tool to block spam with in any case.
