Open Source doesnt mean free, it means just that, its open. Once you have the product you are free to modify it at will, and distribute it for money yourself, as long as the scorce code is tagged along with it. But you must be doing a service, if its just a collection of other Open Source stuff you are allowed to charge a reasonable fee for cd creation and shipping (assuming you do such things, for download you cant charge squat). Or if its your orignal code, its deemed your work, thus chargable for said service.
When i built my remote Helicopter, i had to always fly in view, i used 3 tiny "pinhole" cameras and 3 small CB unit (ham licence req and obtined) they were IR as well (for night flying). It had a range of 300' with resonable quality, i had them outputting to a couple of those handheld tv's borrowed from various mates, to bad it was so damned loud, else i could have spyed on the *very* nice swedish woman who has a third floor flat:)
We can already cybernetically enhance a blind persons vision (a totally blind man had nerves stimulated to simulate a character) , a deaf persons hearing (hearing aids) and a disabled persons muscles (prosthetics, i think thats how you spell it) How long will it be before a full colour screen, inner ear audio implants, and using thought impulses for "typing" (or straight from thought to text ?) for input?
The technologies are here, albiet very young. In the future, the next person you meet could be doing a mental search for your face in there augmented memories, Think about it.
The reason that the heatsink weighs a pond is because it has a SOLID COPPER BASE!!! this is for thermal conductance, and as any self-respecting overclocker knows. Heat is Bad!, lower CPU temp means BETTER STABILITY!!!! My hot AMD still has some issues with running after a few hours of q3a.

I aggree, and in case all those out in/. land havent hade the honour of owning SGI boxes (i have an Indego 2 i got at auction) the run IRIX (unix+ a bit of graphical niceness) ie grab a c/c++ compiler (comes with one), yer fav bit of GNU software and compile and (with one or two exceptions) are away. Graphics rendering is FAR superior on an SGI machine (regardless of OS as proved earlier) I also have a dual P!!! 950 + 256meg ram and it renders SLOWER!!! than the Indego with a 16MHz RISC proc and 32meg.
I bought a second hand VFX1 from http://www.iis.com ok so the res is a crummy 428x224 but with the head tracker converting my movements to the mouse i was well chuffed! plugs strait onto the vid port, i have even hacked the cuberpuck it comes with into a PSX Lightgun with a recoil mechasnism, I dont want VR i want ACTUAL REALITY!!!
(BTW : I want one of the new VFX3D's sweeeet dude!)
I Like those odds, imagine miliseconds and a report could write itself from your thoughts, no fumbling for the words, all the statistics would be displayed on your document (can you tell I'm a student?)
