  1. If we can't have that, then let's outlaw exclusive franchise agreements that prevent competition. Let's also demand that municipalities be allowed to enter the market with their own service.

    Obviously the copyright office is exposing their own quid pro quo arrangements with the business.

    Are you saying that the cops have a hot line to facebook? That would be an interesting story in itself. No, the single point of failure is the local service provider. That is where to cut her off entirely, from twitter, etc, not just facebook.

    Collateral damage, perfectly acceptable in their eyes.. Like roping off the streets in the area. These things usually don't last very long. And I don't know how selective you can be with Stingray.

    Also, who says that she wasn't on cable or fiber?

    Snipping the wire is trivial, and you can cut the power while you're at it. How long does a battery last while transmitting video?

    Or the cops can listen to muzak on hold while their call (which is very important, please remain on the line), will be picked up in the *order it was received*, by the service center in India.

    You got it backwards. I asked with whom would you rather invest yours, in our case, your tax dollars, and for the lobbyists, their bri... I mean, campaign donations. Who is going to provide the better return with less fuss? This is business. Who do you want as your CEO?

    In Slack tty1 is always running (but not logged in), and I have no trouble getting there if the keyboard still works after the X server freezes.

    "Magic" Alt + SysRq might be the best option left...

    Now I have to find something that's as effective for Windows.

    Still, there was no reason to take away our reset switch. They could have just made it recessed (needing a paperclip) to prevent accidents. We need a real mechanical way to force an instant restart/shutdown of the machine. Failure to provide one is actually dangerous.

    No, it's not profit, it's a risk that the banks take into account.

    If you remember what happened in 2008, you would understand that the banks take no risks.

    It's absolutely not that they make money from theft.

    Kinda strange to hear that from a person that tells me about "second hand information" :-) 4.5 trillion in "excess reserves" isn't exactly chump change.

    Unfortunately simply leaving the country isn't good enough to avoid paying taxes. You gotta keep your income down below the minimum that requires you to file, or you have to renounce your citizenship, which they make pretty difficult, and it means you need to acquire citizenship somewhere else. The sociopaths that rule will not allow you to live, much less travel freely on planet earth without papers.

    Yeah, pretty convenient, huh? You'd think it was almost planned that way as part of the tag team with the republicans. To make sure the two worst possible candidates would face each other, and help keep congress from getting too lopsided and preventing the democrats from using republican "obstruction" to break their platform promises (rotating villain). They almost blew it in 2008, but the "blue dogs" saved the day, and they were able to toss a few seats in 2010 to bring it back closer to the 50/50 ratio to keep the gridlock game running right up to today. No, no, it's nothing like that at all, everything was on the up and up, perfectly legitimate. Politics is the most honest business there is.

  22. So if the mouse no longer responds to movement, it's the video card's fault? The signal still has to pass through the motherboard, doesn't it? I'm still wondering what prevents the input from reaching the CPU. There is still no isolation from the application. It's just not right. And the lack of a real mechanical reset switch is even more ridiculous. It's another symptom of marketing over technology.

    I'm sure the bar has a phone you can use in emergencies. Heck, the bar tender might already be on the phone by the time you ask them for emergency services.
