The old codec cannot use new encoding techniques, unless a time machine is involved somehow. For H.264, it looks like 2028 is the year to celebrate its freedom from human bondage, so unfortunately there is still a lot of time left. If governments are going to issues patents, they also have an obligation to control licensing and pricing to avoid this kind of abuse.
Like the previous response said, this particular thing isn't a product. But you are right. Long term is not in Google's lexicon. That is 19th century thinking to all the new money flying over our heads. Their products last about as the bubbles in boiling mud. BUT! Mail is still up. Despite all my ISP's ownership changes, I can keep the same email. Actually for long term, AOL is the way to go. I have a 25 year old account, but can't remember the damn password.
We know nothing of the sort! We do not know who to trust. For all practical purposes there can be none. Everything is up for grabs. All bets are off. Yous takes your chances..
You know what would be cool? If people who buy stuff formed an organization where they could rate products and post prices on a public forum. Probably best to have the government do it so it doesn't get bought out by some hedge fund guy and dismantled. Then we could have one stop window shopping and everything. So many problems can be avoided if we could only communicate more effectively.

Laptops do not have a hard wired switch, and with some, you can't remove the battery. The only way to know it's off is by letting it run down, but the good old CR2032 will keep everything on 'standby' for you for years:-)
