  1. Climate Change (NOT global warming) on Global Warming Worse Than Thought · · Score: 2

1.Climate change is the real issue. the normal weather patterns which we have seen for years are changing. formerly inhabitable cold regions become more harsh and un-inhabitable, arable land is becoming dry desert. It remains to be seen what the full effect of our pollution revolution will be.

2.we've all heard that the scientists don't know what they're talking about and there's no way to predict the future of the climate. But why can't we at least acknowledge that what we do to our air will have some effect on our environment?

the fact that we don't know what is going to happen sounds like an excellent reason to be cautious with how much we change (pollute) our atmosphere. Yes, we could continue to be niave and say what we do will not matter; that would be easy. The developed world will cope with climate change but there are cultures won't. Like those who rely on subsistance farming in regions which are going through desertification. An article in the Jan/Feb issue of MotherJones describes the killer winter and famine being experienced by nomadic herders in Mongolia.

...and what do we do when, immeadeatly after launching particles into the atmosphere, a volcano erupts and blocks another % of light. There is so much chaos already in the system. Earth can metabolize the toxins we have fed it, lets quit smoking before this cancer becomes terminal.

The only phones in the US which are SIM based are GSM phones and the SIMs are not necessarily compatable between phones. Some phone manufactures make phones with standard, full sized SIM cards but AFIK the majority of GSM phones sold have a reduced size SIM.

I love SIMs. I dropped my phone quite a few times and eventually it stopped working. Rather than loose all of my phone numbers and have to go without a phone until I could afford a replacemnet I just stole my roomates identical phone and swapped our cards when I needed to use a cellphone.

  5. More on PSC on Compaq To Build DEC Beowulf Supercomputer · · Score: 3

The PSC has a release here

I was involved with the pittsburgh supercomputing center in high school. We were given a grant for processing time, something like $40,000, to compute the heat loss of my community due to improper insulation. Admittedly, I was on the fray of the group but I know they have been using massively parallel systems for a while. They also had an Internet connection which is where I first used Lynx.

At that time they had a T3D and a "DEC supercluster" which was IIRC 256 Digital Alpha computers. They had some other supercomputers but I can't remember what they were. The supercluster was later upgraded to 512 processors. It seems that this is the same thing, updated and built by Compaq (who bought Digital).

I agree that people are not going to start watching movies on pc's but my laptop w/ DVD has a S-Video port. All I have to do is put a 30Gig harddrive in my fileserver, start copying rented dvd's onto the server, and use my 10Mbps wireless network to access the pirated files from my laptop which I would connect to the 19inch tv. I know dvds are way too expensive to make it a worthwhile investment but harddrive space is abundant (at least around this apartment) and easily reusable. I believe the movie industry is greedy and with that mindset they have a legitimate argument. They are not going to go out of business, but could loose money and *hopefully* some control.

I don't even own a tv -- just my 15 inch laptop lcd for watching dvds.

Just because McDonalds CAN sell billions of dollars of low nutrient burgers in foriegn markets does not mean they should. The consequences of this range from small restaraunts closing due to the local support for McDonalds which comes from the advertising tactics employed by McDonalds (inferior product gains market share because of slick advertising) and lower wages because McDonalds spreads the profit not between the employees of a store but throughout the corporate structure. US compaines going to foreign markets to get more customers is good only for the executives. I don't eat at McDonalds or any fast food "restarant" (chain) for these and other reasons.
