I'm just amazed that he left the country at all. If he had planned this a bit beforehand he could probably fake going to HK in the first place while staying in the US undetected, it's a vast country so hiding should be easy provided you change your apparance and get a fake id.
The main reason why KGB was way better was primarily the fact that a western agent could be bought with money, something that was more or less impossible in the east. Utilizing capital in the USSR was not the easies of things.
So you believe that only the filesystem can corrupt the datafiles, I sense that you have never encountered that nice feeling when the MS SQL Server have corrupted the binary files so that restore is simply ignored due to "corrupt database". VSS won't rescue you there.
Of course unless you use only InnoDB (which everyone does since it's the default for some years now) and use --single-transaction to do the dump via a transaction istead of locking the tables.
Yes, but I'm talking about the corner cases where the SQL Server has completely trashed the database files due to some bug in the SQL Server, if you then have the dump as a number of INSERT statements in a text file you have a much higher chance of recovering the data, or atleast partial amounts of it.
And yes I write this because I have seen MS SQL Server corrupt datafiles in this way before.
mysqldump? But what you are doing, i.e backup of the database files directly, is a very dangerous form of backup. Restoring such when the database has been corrupted for whatever reason is not something I would enjoy, so going by an ascii dump like mysqldump does is way more saner from that perspective, it's of course also way more slow.
Won't happen because very few applications will target Mir or Wayland directly. They will most likely use GTK+, Qt, SDL etc. So once either of those widgetslibraries supports both Mir and Wayland there is no need to emulate Mir on Wayland and vice verse. XMir and XWayland is needed though since there is still a lot of X11-only applications out there.
So if I charge you with a fixed EUR rate but with a varying EURUSD rate (due to me living in Europe and thus having my prices set in EUR) this makes the USD not a currency?
But how are the tax supposed to work? HFT does not generate more trades than "normal" trading, what it does increase in loads and loads though is orders. If we pre-HFT had a ratio of 100:1 between number of orders to trades the ratio is somewhere near 10000:1 in the post-HFT world.
I don't live in the US so I have no day to day references of these cases, I have several from my own country however in which _no_ case as of yet that has been brought up due to intelligence programs like this have survived in the courts even once. All combined show how desperate the secret services are to present just one case that can justify the programs.
However I have heard about several cases in the US in where the FBI seams to have infiltrated some groups, and when the groups didn't act as the undercover agent wanted (i.e there was only talk and no action) the agent provided the group with arms, explosives and plans. And then the FBI would strike and call it a successful anti terrorist bust. I think that I read about some of these in Bruce Schneiers monthly CryptoGram.
That is a complete different thing. You are talking about keeping intelligence programs top secret while I talk about keeping the results of the program secret. The two are very very different.
Defending things like Ultra means that you have to let some of the "attacks" proceed like the many warships that the US and the UK allowed to be sunk by the Germans during WWII in order to keep Ultra a secret.
And I do not think that the US allowed things like 9/11 to happen or ever happen again just to protect the program. Stopping the attack by either making the people disappear or by prosecuting them would alert the terrorists that the program is in action. And also there cannot be a terrorist in the world that doesn't already assume that these programs is in effect.
Still doesn't mean that we have to like it. You might have every right in the world to charge me for something but I am still allowed to tell you that I thing that you are overpriced.
Actually I think that if they had been wildly successful then we would hear about it, and hear about it alot. Consider all the plots that they have "caught" and how quickly that was posted to the media, and how unlikely plots they really where, to me that indicates that they are desperat to publish every success.
Better than actually revealing them is to threaten you that we will reveal it. I guess that all that collected data will be used for blackmail by either people within the agencies or by the agencies themselves at some point. Spring cleaning is the word if I'm not mistaken.
Just checked to be sure and we do have postal voting but it's only for people who are outside of the country on the election day and there's a very strict procedure; for example you must send it via a foreign postal service, the procedure must be witnessed by two people above 18 years of age that verifies that the procedure was followed and so on.
Providing such a lists would enable forced votes and buying of votes on a large scale. Both which are extreme disadvantages of an electronic system and which you do not have with a paper system.
I can more than some observing, I am allowed (and many people exercise this rights) to stay and watch the ballot box from the moment my ballot enters it and until it's counted.
The counting itself is performed by a minimum of three people, the ballot passes by each counter and they tally their own results. If the three values do not match then they have to recount. And this whole process is public as I said earlier.
Electronic voting brings only two benefits to the table: speed and availablity. But what good is it to get a new result in seconds when it's valid for the next four years (and in our case over here, does not go into affect until a few months later anyways). Also the availability is of questionable merit, if you don't bother enough to go to the election place, why should we be interested in your vote?
Also depends upon how the mail voting is implemented, over here (Sweden) you don't just mail in your vote. You still have to go to specific voting places (if you are abroad you have to go to the Embassy) and there the voting is set up exactly like it's done on election day in the normal voting place.
You don't even have to watch to see if he goes to the voting place, all you have to do is to confiscate his passport on the voting day, you can even return it to him the next day.

Yeah but is it web scale?

Perhaps they are just so repulsed by the hyenas that they loose their appetite :)
Yeah but does it _fear_ the hyenas?
I think the church might call that Blasphemy ;)
So if I charge you with a fixed EUR rate but with a varying EURUSD rate (due to me living in Europe and thus having my prices set in EUR) this makes the USD not a currency?
Yes they have, there are several news feeds that are directly aimed at beeing fed into HFT-systems.
But how are the tax supposed to work? HFT does not generate more trades than "normal" trading, what it does increase in loads and loads though is orders. If we pre-HFT had a ratio of 100:1 between number of orders to trades the ratio is somewhere near 10000:1 in the post-HFT world.

The verifiability of current systems is pretty low. You can't tell if your vote is included in the total. Thats a problem.
Of course you can, over here on election day any one who wants are free to stay and monitor the whole counting process
