The MPAA's main arguement against DeCSS appears to be that it can be used to rip DVDs. However, even with a large hard drive and broadband internet access of some sort, it would be difficult to trade more than a few movies.
Hate to reply to myself (for risk of acting schitzophrenic), but why is this "overrated". I can see anything about this that could possibly be overrated. I could even understand "flamebait" or "troll", if you look at it from a certain viewpoint, but why "overated?" Just because you (J. Random Moderator) disagree with my political views, doesn't mean you should mod me (or anyone else) down about it. If you are going to moderate, read the guidelines and follow them.
This appears to be very similar to the Is Linux Dying? series of story on the main portion of slashdot earlier. Perhap since those didn't generate the fanatical fervor necessary to increase/.'s hits (and therefore CmdrTaco's wallet), the slash team has moved onto BSD.
I must say, Jon Katz isn't that bad. I mean, seriously, he was a journalist before most of the trolls here were born. If you had any sense you'd realize that he has to be considered talented by most of the public. Wired and Rolling Stone don't hire people without talent.
Simply because GWB used it in one speech doesn't mean it didn't use it in another. Furthermore, I have to control over how this was moderated, so complaints launched at me over this being mod'ed up are without my powers to correct.
Anything taken out of context can be made to support your point. What that meant, if listened to the whole speech is that we should have stricter penalties for criminals. He was saying that even though america is free, one still shouldn't be able to harm others.
What worries me is that people have this perception that giving the government something is safer than giving it to terrorists. I don't trust the NSA or CIA with PGP any more than i trust J. Random Islamic Militant. The government is made up of people just like you and me, so why are they less fallible?
I think this is interesting from a psychology standpoint. Apple basically sells the product based on aesthetics. Thefore, when their aesthetics are challenged, they respond. I bet that if someone was to imitate another facit of the OS, Apple probably wouldn't care.
Actually, this trend was started by nerds. The mainstreamers just got involved when anime showed up on Cartoon Network. I think stuff like pokemon will disapear, because little kids change their mind very quickly, but I don't think that anime will lose popularity all that quickly. +===========================+

I predict that this gets shot down in court for more than one reason:
a)In the terms of use agreement, there is a clause that says they can update the policy at any time. They then updated the policy by banning the sale of items and characters.
b)What you are really selling is data, on Sony servers, created by Sony software. What you pay for, when you are paying to play is access and alter the data stored on the server.
c)They will be going up against Sony lawyers. I don't care how many items or characters you've sold, you won't be able to match Sony's legal budget. +===========================+

The reason you can't see a lot of colors when it is dark doesn't have to do with the light/dark modifiers, it has to do with the amount of light that must be reflected into the eye in order for certain parts of the eye to work. I can't remember if it was rods or cones that see colors, but whichever it was, that type of cell takes more light to become active than the cells that just see light or dark. Thus, in dim light, things appear to lose color. +===========================+

The french have really funny and inefficient ways of doing things in their legal system. I don't mean this as a flame against the french, most of them are well adjusted people. I mean France told America, bring Echalon, or else like there was something they could do if the Americans didn't. Then this. They could make it illegal to view those kind of things in their country, and stop bugging American companies. Secondly, they got a revolution but no freedoms from it evidently. On the overhand, I can see why the don't want their citizens to see this stuff. They were invaded by the Germans during WW2, so it's a much more personal issue for them. +===========================+

Your calculations are flawed: you assume that they redraw EVERY pixel EVERY second at a full rate. It isn't often necessary to do this. I mean think about it, if a PC used such a retarded redraw method for say...Diablo 2 it would take like 3 seconds a frame. Plus, a better video processor helps to juggle that and possible reduce the RAM requirements.
If you use AOL, and this upsets you, then you have two choices: a) get a different service provider. b)stick with the older version. This isn't so scary because it is limiting the AOLer's ability to set a homepage, but because it could spread to other major browsers. I mean, IE is already *this* close to doing it, and netscape isn't far behind. I geuss that leaves mozilla. The moz project could be our last, best hope in browsers.
Could this be karma(sic). I mean, perhaps the source was stolen because some kind of deity with a sense of humor wanted to get them back for all the stealing they've done?
BSD as an operating system keeps getting more and more impressive. Many sites composed of a set of servers and a load balancer don't perform as admiriably. As yes Linux users, I do believe BSD hasus beat this time. Don't whine, congratulate them.
That's funny how whenever a Linux group does this, it's considered zealotry, but when Microsoft does it, they are just putting away myths. The truth is, every impartial study shows that Linux beats M$ technology by vast amounts. Then again, BSD seems to be doing even better. Anyone remember what happened to hotmail after M$ tried to switch to Win2k? They were back to BSD by the end of the week! Why is this? Well, Linux and BSD have much higher throughput, more efficient memory usage, and MUCH less overhead than ANY windows product. Can anyone say Fear and Loathing in Redmond?
There's one thing about Linux that really makes this unlikely. Since there is no central control of Linux (ok, maybe the wonderful kernel devel folx, but they are to busy to form an monopoly) no one person can say, oh, from now on, only this, this, and this packages are part of Linux, but not these. Personally I prefer diveristy to a single standard. While it would make almost everything interchangable, it would take the freedom, openness, and inventive spirit out of the open software movement.
Just about everyone (in the US that is) is getting a tax cut, based on what you payed originally. Is that unfair? Pay more, get more back? No?

Simply:
What is your favorite slashdot troll (i.e. hot grits, not CmdrTaco)?
