Well, I guess the only to make an OSS RDBMS ASAP IMHO is to get Oracle or Inprise to lend a couple of their developers full time to a new project, and get a scarce amount of public developers to come online and aid in the development..Who knows, we might get a new RDBMS in a couple years or so.
Hey, you should work for Mozilla, I've heard they've got a couple bugs they need to work out still. Open Source just makes KILLING bugs easier, it doesn't mean there are less bugs, it means bug-killing is a faster and more efficient process....Many eyes...etc
It is the wrong way to go about it...The only way is to have formalized teacher reviews at the end of every semester, much like my college does...It does a lot to improve the curricula, as well as to motivate the teachers to suck up to us during review week:) nothing better than teachers suckholing the STUDENTS for good reviews..
Granted, I have nothing against my instructors except respect for the effort put in to teaching a big bunch of losers such as my class, but hey, if they come out to the bar with us after a hard week, they aren't all that bad:)
The site in question is of course, a definite boost to the egos of students who, for whatever reason, have a large chip on their shoulder concerning the inability of certain professors to function in an expected capacity
But...
It also provides a service to people, who, on a VERY slim chance find their future teacher on that site, to be informed about what is coming up...The problem with any type of Internet review is that it's generally too spur-of-the-moment to actually generate a decent review...I know I've caught myself writing some pretty scathing reviews/flames/whatevers, and didn't even bother to think about it before I hit Send..The majority of reviews, in fact, are probably going to be negative for this reason..
Anger is a bigger motivator than any other emotion
So, while this teacher is quite obviously, over-reacting to what is, most likely, a group of students with certain chips on their shoulders, he should still take notice, and read between the lines a bit....no-one is perfect after all, especially computer teachers;)
Considering it's 500,000 character limit, this keyboard could almost be used a simple transmission medium when inconspicuous movement of small amounts of data is needed...not that floppies aren't conspicuous, but some companies make sure floppy drives are not installed on workstations. Heck, if this becomes mainstream, I could see keyboards being secured for 'departmental' reasons....Pandora's box time, do we dare open?
The IT staff now control your destiny, lock your keyboards gentlemen, it's about to get nasty
I don't see how allowing Linux access the antiquated POS (piece of SH*T) POS (Point of Sale) terminals are going to better the Linux movement as a whole. Software to run the POSPOS's will be written yes, so? Will it be open-sourced? Will it be secure? Will cashiers still hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE when there's a line up of 8 people waiting?
I'm still not 100% convinced that this isn't just another marketing gimmick to get all of the comp.power.users to take a closer look...Play the hardcore user angle and you are guaranteed to get some interest from specific groups, or at least get your site/.'ed.
