The whole point of the US fighting the "evil" "terrorists" is simply because they have a lower standard. Because they hurt innocent people, torture and kill indiscriminantly.
Now when the US starts doing the same thing - what's the point of removing one 'terrorist group' in order to put in a better financed one?
No seriously. The amount of things I have learnt from researching on the internet...
Anyone who has ever tried to develop any non-trivial piece of software knows all about learning on your own by using the internet. What is the fuss all about? Because its for children instead of adults?
"proposal was designed to keep drivers from running over pedestrians who might be crossing behind their vehicles"
Its called a rear-view mirror.
Unless its a toddler or a VERY short person, having an image on your dashboard, or to your top will make no difference to whether you can see them or not. If your kid is small enough such that someone reversing his car can't see him - then s/he probably shouldn't be out on their own.
There was some information. Like the whole "Spying on UN members", and a confirmation about the accidental kidnapping of a German Citizen who was taken to Afghanistan for torture.
I haven't read all of them - so I've no idea about the rest. But even those two pieces of information give very important information about the government.
Now that the general public know these two piece of information - do you think they look in the government in the same way? Do you think the public would continue to support some actions?
Well, democracy is about the people deciding which governmental party (and canditates) better reflect their own beliefs and the good of the country.
Knowing what exactly everyone is getting up to - helps push this process along nicely. The diplomatic cables, not so much. The horrors of the wars in the middle east - quite a bit I think.
Wikileaks, which is revealing the truth about governments and therefore aiding (in a way) the democratic process - is being killed off because it is risky for companies to continue supporting it....
Over here where I come from, not only do government buildings have free wifi - but so do public areas such as parks or gardens.
You can just bring a laptop and work there (for as long as your battery lasts at least) or whatever. That way people who don't want/have data plans can still get wireless internet.
Water might have huge environmental impacts - but wind and solar?
Alright you need a ton of energy to make a photovoltaic cell - but you still get a net energy profit, and its not like we're running low on Silicon or anything...
So instead of supporting that poor countries get stuff like photovoltaics - which are modular, can be upgraded and are pretty much portable and 'place anywhere' (and clean!) - we're encouraging them to use something that involves transporting radioactive materials to what is essentially a very expensive environment-ruining nuclear-timebomb which they will need to pay for, build enough power infrastructure - roads for getting the enriched uranium in, and places to dump the very dangerous waste.
They should just give them free photovoltaics - you can just set a mini-plant in any of the villages, and you don't need expensive infrastructure either - nor a backup-plan when shoddy maintenance causes a meltdown.
"These could stipulate a no first use policy, outlaw unaimed weapons, or mandate weapons that self-destruct at the end of hostilities."
There are tons of major differences between a nuclear weapon and cyber-'weapons' .
Firstly, how do you work out who sent it? A nuclear warhead is pretty easy to track - but what about Stuxnet?
Also, civilians aren't generally capable enough to create their own nuclear weapons, they can make cyber-'weapons'.
What it'll end up with is everyone agreeing that cyber-weapons are bad and banned, then doing stuff in secret.
The solution is better security. Yes, its an impossible goal - but its still more realistic than having the president going- "Dammit! My facebook has been DDOSed. Someone get me the Kremlin!"
1. If your friend already knows your first and last name, you probably know him enough to be able to talk to him about it on another communication channel ("Hey, I'm adding you to my apple game list") 2. If you don't know your friend personally, because you met him in another game, or another community - then you probably don't want him knowing details like that. I play a lot with the same community. In this case they will know me enough to recognise my nickname, but giving them my name and surname will not help them identify me any more than I would want them to.
Since the game center works on their iProducts only, any spammer who is going to buy a ton of those in order to spam other players deserves a medal for stupidity.
I'm pretty sure you can easily lock the phone of a spammer (or at least stop him making accounts) without needing to spread names around.
1. Apple has a game center? 2. This will have 0 negative reaction whatsoever. This is Apple people. If apple forced you to sign your name in blood to buy an iPhone, you would.
Maintenance is the most expensive and time consuming part of any computer system. Since its continously being updated, then its still being maintained - effort is still being poured into it, so it should keep its status.
I am 100% in agreement that software (including games) which isn't maintained anymore should be released into the public domain. If nothing it'll mean that developers will take more care of their products.
Now if the code in question is not modified in 20 years, then burnt on a cd, it shouldn't be increased because it changed medium.
More predictable semantic information which can be used in to collect more information about the users. Hooray!
Regarding the "Higher Standard" Comment.

We still wouldn't be safe. What if you're carrying something dangerous in your car?

At least now you know.

Still better than radioactive waste...

First thought which came to my mind:
1. Apple has a game center?
2. This will have 0 negative reaction whatsoever. This is Apple people. If apple forced you to sign your name in blood to buy an iPhone, you would.

"they are free to model naked" ... "You don't lose those rights when you turn 50."
Maybe you should. For all of us.
Once upon a time there was something called Democracy
The idea was the the majority would define what is right and what is wrong.
Somewhere across the line however it turned into a "the people who can pull up the most money", and we're stuck that.
I don't think it should be legal to copy songs which the owners don't want you to - but they shouldn't have a few hundred dollars each in punishment.
Thanks, I've been looking for a way of blocking facebook (except on its own website) for ages.
