Facebook is actually using personal data and information which its collecting for me... in order to make profits? Facebook is tracking me in order to learn more about me?
Who would have thought that an innocent company like Facebook, with no privacy issues ever - would stoop to that?
I am shocked! This internet thing is so new to me.
Oh come on, we all know its poisoning the well - example
"Man steals car"
"African American aslyum-seeker steals car"
"Black illegal immigrant steals car"
All three of those can describe the same story. Do you notice the bias towards the end?
Sure they're all true, but are they linked to the story? Does him being a rape suspect, in any way contributes to this story? Of course it could be "Mothers Against Rape Suspects" DDOSing him, but that's unlikely.
That depends, you also need to not share the name of someone who did something wrong. Otherwise you may end up on a no-fly list, or kidnapped from your country and taken to Afghanistan for torture.
1. The data centers are in another country - and bombing other countries is an act of war 2. The data center is in a disused nuclear bunker. So you're going to need a hell of a lot of bombing.
1. The majority don't care 2. The majority are stupid 3. The few people who care, don't matter numerical-wise 4. Biggest companies set the standard 5. People are used to [large company] 6. If you don't use [large company] - you will get flak when something goes wrong.
One it sets a standard. What's to stop [otherSearchEngine] to not put [otherSearchEngine]shopping first? You'll arrive at the point where (to continue your analogy) - all the media houses have their own top 10 list, dominated by their own songs.
Secondly, Google is the biggest and most popular - so any plan which involves "People are free to not use it" will fail miserably.
I'm pretty sure any company would have turned towards that in the end. I think the problem will be proving it. Since google know pretty much how their ranking algorithm works - I'm pretty sure they can design a site which always turns up top - without needing to 'cheat'.
I'm not sure who's side I'm on this time. I mean, it'd be stupid if (say) you google something on Bing and you don't get the Microsoft solution first. I think it'd be weird if you look up "Shopping" and google shopping is at the bottom.
I installed skype the other day and I got a plugin for firefox automatically - no choice to not have it installed. Will I use it? Nope.
Remember the days when people would install toolbars on your PC? This is just like it. Plugins do help the experience - but only if I want them to. I don't want my browser checking for updates to Google Earth, or having quicktime stuff installed.
If you're really going to give a young kid a netbook... with an internet connection then block ALL websites and connections, except ones which you trust them seeing. Or don't give them internet access at all. I wouldn't, not at that age.
When I was 4 I used to love playing around with a computer, I didn't have educational games or anything, I just to just play lemmings, or mess around with a word processor or something. Try to let the kid get used to using a computer at a young age for normal tasks.
If you really feel adventurous, give him a Pascal IDE or something.

No no. Share the name as in "Have the same (or similar) name with someone who's wanted".
Just ask this gentleman -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_El-Masri
So you're going to go on a bombing run blowing up Swedish infrastructure?
Think of all the Moose you're going to kill.
Now you can take an 8 year old to court.
Rape?
What a stupid argument.
What about the US putting lives at risk? Lives which we would never have known were put in risk without the leaks?
If the government is this dirty - then the people who voted them into power have a right to know. That's democracy.

Its been done already. The files were placed on pirate bay and encrypted. Its a clever backup.
Two problems with this:
1. The data centers are in another country - and bombing other countries is an act of war
2. The data center is in a disused nuclear bunker. So you're going to need a hell of a lot of bombing.
As always in cases like this or similar to this:
1. The majority don't care
2. The majority are stupid
3. The few people who care, don't matter numerical-wise
4. Biggest companies set the standard
5. People are used to [large company]
6. If you don't use [large company] - you will get flak when something goes wrong.

There are two large problems with that.
One it sets a standard. What's to stop [otherSearchEngine] to not put [otherSearchEngine]shopping first? You'll arrive at the point where (to continue your analogy) - all the media houses have their own top 10 list, dominated by their own songs.

No no.
Its like saying you providing top 10 song rankings, and you put bands which have a contract with your company first always.
I can't think of a car analogy.
As far as I know, you pay for the "Sponsored Rankings" on the side, but not for the actual position.
I've heard the "Pro-europe" argument once or twice. The best response I found is that Opera is Norwegian which isn't in the EU.
I'm pretty sure any company would have turned towards that in the end. I think the problem will be proving it. Since google know pretty much how their ranking algorithm works - I'm pretty sure they can design a site which always turns up top - without needing to 'cheat'.

"The free market fails when the majority of consumers are ignorant or apathetic."
They should have thought of that before they decided to invent the free market.
This would defentally not cause any backlash or media campaigns about how the government is ruining free internet will it?
Keep the government out of my internet! The corporations can solve their problems in a way that the consumer is not effected!
Right?
Guys?
anyone?
Not really.

Will make him more powerful than ever.
Only because they want to deny the other people use of one-click shopping.
What I meant is "I doubt anyone wants Amazon to have the one-click shopping patent"
If there was no patent, everyone could have one-click shopping and be happy.
You could just as easily load up Linux instead for a copy costing $0.
If your kid is visiting websites which could give him viruses, then you really need to keep an eye on him.
If you're really going to give a young kid a netbook... with an internet connection then block ALL websites and connections, except ones which you trust them seeing. Or don't give them internet access at all. I wouldn't, not at that age.

Because there's no Eyeglasses Association of America (EGAA) yet.
