    This makes it possible to lay waste to all sorts of expensive proprietary software on windows.

    This also means a cross platform consistant library for the java qt bindings.

    Not so good news for GTK ... I like both but given
    a choice it will probably be qt for targeting both platforms.

    Looking back at your post history it is quite apparent that you are a windows shill. A windows
    shill is equivelent to being a "cheerleader for a car rental outfit that you have little or no interest in", very funny if you ask me.

    I on the other hand like to cheerlead for something that "I own and have a real interest in". Now of course I have no real expectation of that ever really penetrating your skull.

    You name on worm perhaps two now lets compare that to the countless IIS worms and exploits that have occurred just over the last few years. Hell I used to admin a few IIS boxes on the internet, well needless to say those days are gone and everything is now linux.

    By real I mean I know of a quite a few big desktop corporate installations 200+ > desktops and every single one of them use thin client. Go take a look at neoware they make the hands down best linux thin client "no I am not from the company or do I have any interests in them". Load a redhat box turn on xdm and away you go.

    You buy a machine it does not matter what comes on it since every single corporate environment images machines when the come in the door anyhow, so the price is still the same.

    Besides no Linux administrator worth a grain of salt is gonna install linux on anything anyhow. Everyone I know that runs real desktop installations does so using thin client.

    Google only stands one chance or their lifespan is
    limited to a year or two at best. They have to get
    as much stuff on the desktop as they can because MS will integrate their search into the OS. They have got to push firefox now, they need to find a way to own a spot on everbodies desktop and right now firefox is the way to do that.

    You cannot possibly be serious, Mepis would be a good choice but it will not run on good hardware. It cannot boot a scsi root which takes it completely out of the running.

    Work gave me a obsolute mac and we put osx on it and I ran if for a couple of days. It is ok if you want email and a browser. It reminds me of a linux desktop that you have to pay for all the software. It was about as good as a boat anchor because I cannot bring myself to buy software for it.

    Not thanks a linux box gives me anything I ever needed in software without forking out a dime.

    Actually if you knew what you where talking about you would already know that even SP2 checks keys and refuses to install if a know comprimised key exists. So not only can a simple registry hack cause a problem in the future it can cause a serious problem right now.

    Yes and the damn key is stored in the registry, some script kiddie is gonna release a worm, virus or whatever that puts that key into everybodies registry. Now any exploit from that day forward is simple bacause those users cannot install security updates or their machine gets degraded ... brilliant

    Ok say some sinister hacker knowing that cd keys are
    stored in the registry builds a little one liner that inserts a known comprimised key. You know ms is gonna check for this.

    The result is a ton of instantly owned machines since they are unable to install security updates.......brilliant plan

    That being said I hope they enforce their licensing pirates are slowing the uptake of Linux, it hurts everyone.

    Awsome simply awsome the tighter they make their licensing the quicker the uptake for Linux. Hell I don't really know anyone other than some companies that buy legitimate copies of windows. Hopefully they will put a check in Office that will not let you run on a pirated system as well.

    Short term revenue gain, long term loss.

    Cracker finds expolit but tells his buddy joe. Joe reports the vulnerability to some closed list. Cracker in the mean time exploits a 1000 machines because no patch is available and there is no disclosure while the originator is taking his own
    sweet time putting together a patch because nobody supposedly knows about it.

    I also want immediate disclosure so I can defend myself. I don't need to wait for a patch I can patch my own software if I know about it.

    Take for instance a while back there was a linux worm released that copied a file to tmp or something. We knew about it instantly and everyone could apply a quick fix to their box by creating a file of the same name and making it read only thus quickly closing the hole before a patch was even available.

    machine unusable...

    Now if the Mepis guys would just get around to supporting a root file system on a scsi device instead of just IDE I would never have to look at
    Fedora again. Mepis just plain works right from the start but it just won't work on a scsi disk.
