  1. Re:How about PDA+Mobile Phone+MP3 Player? on PDA+MP3 Player · · Score: 1

Casio's latest WinCE palm device has most of this - it can play avi and mpeg video, has 65k colors, I believe it can cope with a MicroDrive, and the only things missing are the mobile phone (I'm not sure about the VoIP thing though - UMTS seems to be rather good, too), and the Bluetooth and USB ports. USB could be neat because it could also power the device, and Bluetooth would enable a wireless headset for your phone - Ericsson has a design study.

Sorry, I'm too lazy to put in URLs - most of it is .com or .org anyway.

  2. Re:Weather is good too! on IBM's "Deep Computing" · · Score: 2

Actually, the ECMWF (European Center for Medium Range Forecasts) is trying seasonal forecasts for most world regions. The forecasts, as you can imagine, aren't very elaborate, and the accuracy is just a few points higher than folklore, but it's a starting point.

On the other hand, real weather prediction for more than, say, ten days is nearly impossible, since the "butterfly effect" grows to a size comparable to the modelled effects after this time.

One thing to the necessity of precise weather: I'm doing short-term forecasting of wind energy. There are regions in the world where in the area of one regional utility the penetration of wind energy is in the order of the minimum load encountered (like Denmark or north-western Germany). There, accurate forecasts can prevent your electrical grid from toppling over, or at least can prevent the utilities from having to buy expensive power on the spot market.

  3. Re:fsck.vfat ? on Using FAT32 with Linux · · Score: 1

I've been researching this, too, after my Win95 one day went straight into Scandisk, which came up with two different versions of the FAT and subsequently found 726 files which had to be corrected... Took me about a week of reinstalling, uninstalling IE4, reinstalling, getting the latest drivers to work, getting the Novell driver to work etc. God was I glad I had linux on my box, so that I could save the most important stuff!

Anyway, after that preliminary blurb ("I feel much better now, Dave."), to the question: a fsck.vfat doesn't seem to exist, and the only real answer I found on DejaNews or anywhere else on the issue was from someone (sounding authorative) who stated that it's not the job of linux hackers to clean up the mess left behind by Microsoft.

Which is a rather striking argument.

  5. This is what you want! on Pictures of the Palm V · · Score: 1

Apart from the fact, perhaps, that it runs WinCE... Check this: 16MB RAM, LiIon, 65k colors in 320x240, same price as the Palm V (~450$), runs mp3 and mpeg videos, and it has a slot for a IBM microdrive!

The only thing which keeps me from buying one (apart from availability) is the fact that I want one whith USB.
Oh, yes, and a GSM phone which wirelessly connects to one of these flashy earpieces like Christof in the Truman show.
    And perhaps VGA.
Actually, a camera on a FlashCard to drop in would be neat, too.
    GPS, maybe.

    Am I missing anything? -)

  7. Work with _both_ screens? on How can you use X on a Notebook and its Docking Station? · · Score: 1

Does anyone know whether it is possible to have both screens working? X should support this, as (they say) does Windows98 - but I would guess this can only work in the configuration with the extra video card in the docking station; or is there a workaround for digitally signalled laptop displays?
