A LOT of big render studios are using linux boxes or moving over to them now that Maya is released for it. This will mean a lot of people wont have to shell out $$$ on top of the maya soft just for more SGI irix or M$ boxes.
This can only be good for the adopting of linux in the corporate enviroment meaning more money and reasearch being put back into it for us all to enjoy =).
Maya will also make this a LOT easyer for the 3D world to change to linux as the interface and command lines are all the same as the irix and Windows versions so it wont require any special training to switch over. Not to mention linux is a LOT more stable that NT/2000 when your rendering and also a lot easyer to admin remotley.
Also the Maya for linux comes in RPM (its made for redhat) so it should be easy to convert into deb's or just use on mandrake ect ect or your current favorite distro.

Actualy in a sense they still are "real actors" because they used mocap tools (Motion caputure) to feed into the computers to control the characters movement.
So all the movements you see (apart from the realy impossible ones that would have been tweaked my the animators) are actualy captured from a real person with lots of Cool Stuff(TM) attached all over him =)
If this thing is just a linux box then surely its not going to be hard to port or just install drivers for the games we have already.
They should ship this thing with Quake 3 or similar that would get some attention.
One thing that concerns me from the developer page
is that you cant gaurantee what hardware they may have.
and i quote "Oh yes. The OST platform is well suited for various applications. However, as it supports a number of input devices (keyboard, remote control, etc) you can't be sure that all game players do have a gamepad or joystick."
now this is going to be a major downside if a user has to buy a new input device for every game were as the PSX or PS2 all have the same game pad or compatible for every game.
It may seem a small amount for the controller but it can often turn people away if they have to buy extras to run things (just like a PC)
the idea of a console is to run EVERY game that is made for it out of the box and with no hassle.
i wonder if it would be possible to hack a normal personal CD player to play MP3 Cds. this would actualy make use of the fact mp3s are small and CDs can hold a lot hi doubt it would be too hard but you would need to be able to read from the CDs and make you own interface. unless you riped out an IDE interface from a CDrom and transplanted it all into a personal CD player. could be interesting to see if it could be done. definatly worth looking into. One small problem how is the Mp3 player going to hear your commands over the noise of the music? i dont know about you but the volume i have my music on there wouldn be any point as it wouldnt hear me also you have the problem that the mp3 player might get confused between the music and the commands and end up turning itself off or changing tracks all by itself
well just a thought but its probably why the big companys havent made one....
True but a basic linux kernal with only the drivers loaded would run faster than a box running a whole windows waste of cpu/ram stuff. plus with linux being open source could probably be optimised for the job
Wasnt the PSX based on a Linux kernal?? well the PSX was the equivilent of a p100 and the way PSX games run compared to a windows p100(or even a p200) is a LOT different maybye if some of the PSX were ported to linux.. well just a thought
