    I seriously considered working as an expat in Malaysia for BT and the Apartheid with a brownface aspect put me off and also if your a guy you have to get your hair cut to the approved length as did one of my coworkers who did go out there. Also the humidity is killing my co-worker had to abandon his posting because it affected his asthma.

    You know Kaspersky is best buds with FSB. If you have interesting tastes in websites and have high security I am sure they would consider using that as leverage to get you to act as an agent for them.

    There are alternatives to Java for writing your MR programs if you have better things to do that worry about class paths etc :-) http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/writing-an-hadoop-mapreduce-program-in-python/

    And back in the 80's BT used PL/1 (plus a bit of Fortran 77) to do Map reduce as the core of a billing system for the dialcom systems -even manged ro sell it to other telcos as a replacement for the Dialcom product.

    Not for large scale sites its not 10% try migrating major online brands with knowing exactly what you are doing and you will lose a metric fuck ton of money - i know major publishers (no names no pack drill) who've have wasted 10's of millions on botched site rebuilds.

    Agreed minitel is a french take on videotex systems which PRESTEL was the first work started back in the late 60's by the BBC and the GPO. Back in the day i had a minitel in my collection of odd terminals when I worked for Tymnet.

    The problem is how do you bill efficiently for such tiny transactions (i used to write billing systems for the dialcom platform back in the day and that was tricky charging for a much smaller traffic load - we used map reduce as the core of the billing system back then) and how do you charge the spammers.

    Also would you charge only between AS to AS or would you tax companies sending email between offices (ie replacing post services)

    unfortunately "adult supervision" at Google is some what lacking and I am afraid that the mix of hot housed Stanford grads and the infestation of MBA types made the common sense decision hard to make. This is in theory what Eric is supposed to do use real word experience to temper Larry and Sergeis lack of real world experience.

    I suspect that the Google culture that spawned issues like this is a factor in why Marissa left
