My initial knee jerk was that it would suck, but this dude has directed some of the best videos ever (IMO) - Madonna's "Frozen", Portishead's "Only You". These videos kick ass. That's not to say that his skill will automatically translate to a feature-length film, but I think it has potential.

You show me some cases of someone being thrown in jail or shot because they refused to get a supermarket membership card or installed Linux instead of Windoze, and we'll talk. Until then, you're just making a particularly braindead attempt to equate petty (corporate) nuisances with serious (government) coercion.
I can provide innumerable examples of corporate (and government) neglect, greed and shortsightedness that has led to loss of life and other serious non-nuisances. If it weren't for (some parts of) our government, we'd still be working 80 hours a week for a pittance in unsafe conditions without benefits and being fired at will. I am neither a libertarian nor a big-government advocate. I simply think that we, the people, need to continue to monitor and keep in check those that would take advantage of us without (usually negative) incentives to do otherwise.

I am surprised no one has mentioned speed over color. I'd love to see the Palm with at least a 200 MHz processor. I have wanted to write a PGP-compatible program for the pilot for some time now, but at the current speed, it'd be pretty worthless. Besides, think of how many RC5 key we could crack while the thing is sitting idle in our pockets (I know, I know, batteries and all...)
I do realize the current crop is not necessarily slow, but some apps do drag a bit on the Palm. Having cut my teeth on (and just having sold my last) Newton, I got offly used to the speed.

That CS student may want to think about switching to History or Botany. Renaming a file in any O/S should take about 5 seconds. For day-to-day (non-hacking) use, the MacOS = Win = Gnome = KDE = useful

I have done a non-trivial amount of work (documentation, patches, working on message threading DHTML) on IMP but did not end up on the list. If anyone would feel comfortable allowing me to buy the 100 shares offered to them that they cannot or do not wish to use, please let me know at jase@deadbeets.com. I'll be buying RHAT one way or another and keeping it indefinitely. It would be nice to be in on the ground floor.
Thank you very much.

And probably wouldn't hold my 21" monitor, it looks like they are trying to make a buck or two off ole' Neal Stephenson. They've started a company called Snow Crash. Even the URL is lame. From the site
HELSINKI Proventus Design (Sweden) establishes SNOWCRASH as a trademark and company. This was announced in Helsinki on Wednesday 28 October 1998.

Sounds like you may have some issues, here, stevie. Take a deep breath... good. Now, let's have some rational discussion... Keep breathing...
The environmentalists that I respect realize there needs to be a balance and that we should look at maintaining the balance of various of Earth's systems for the long term good of all who benefit from those systems.
Hope that helps you feel a bit better.

I can't help but cringe when she starts the article talking about the "SUV-driving, politically oblivious latte-esthete Weekly reader" and then goes on to mention how one should worry about fingerprinting at the welfare office.
The article rehashed some old issues, brought up nothing new and liberally sprinkled FUD about the area. Ho hum.

FascDot, I think you jumped on this person too quickly. Indeed many HR people do not have access to PS capable printers nor do they have Ghostscript handy on their Winboxes. I believe the person was referring to your average low-end HPGL-only laser printer. No need to sling epithets (and bwahaha's) like that.

Well, this does seem to be a bit of a troll, but it's a well worded troll, IMO. I would consider sendmail to meet your criteria of "better job, support, clear instructions".
It's a shame to see Metcalfe and others trying to compare Windows and Linux. IMO, they operate in two distinct spaces with only a moderate amount of overlap.
What about beowulf? I don't think the folks at Los Alamos & Fermilab are too worried about glossy manuals. Once again, separate spaces.
Jason Dufair "Those who know don't have the words to tell
Let's be perfectly clear here. WinAmp is (was?) not OSS, free software, GNU, or anything else. It is shareware. You have to pay to use it legally. No source is available. I suspect AOL will make it free. They do not charge for other software - they charge for service.
Jason Dufair "Those who know don't have the words to tell
According to the XFree86 FAQ: Although it is technically possible to use multiple PCI-based SVGA cards in the same machine, none of the servers currently support this. The VGA16 and Mono servers are both capable of running both a VGA compatible card and a non-VGA compatible monochrome card in the same machine. For XFree86-4.0 we are working on true multi head support.

I was in the process of downloading the latest beta to check it out when the files got yanked and 1.0 put up. Weird. Checked out 1.0 on the 30 day license. Might as well have been a 30 minute license. I was sold. VMware is all that and a bag of chips (SIMMs, DIMMs, etc;-) Best $75 I've parted with in ages. I'll be up all night repartitioning, installing, etc. Wheeee! Where else can one simultaneously run apache, MySql, php, Ghostscript, GNOME, etc. side by side with Quicken 99, Taxcut, Outlook, and MS Greetings Workshop. Unlike many folks who tend to be OS elitists, I am an OS whore. Bring em on. Can't wait to play with DOS 3.3 again. I wonder if I'll be able to install Fusion (a MacOS emu) in a VMWare DOS box. How fun! Now if X only supported multple monitors. I suppose that's worth giving up until XFree86 4.0
Jason Dufair "Those who know don't have the words to tell
I set up an account, only to find that you can only encrypt to other husmail [sic] accounts. What about standards, folks? PGP, S/MIME? I really don't think we need another "patent pending" encryption system. I'm pleased to see they're using blowfish, but why not use PGP then? Doesn't PGP6 support blowfish?

I think this is a tricky issue because how do you really define source code? Code that has to be compiled to run? Where does that leave Perl, Java, other interpreted langauges? Is interpreting the same as compiling? I could use a "null compiler" and call a binary my "source." Code that is human readable? What would be the status of entries into the obfuscated code contests?
If one wanted to get around the "source code only" restriction, I would think it would be easy. One could have a small stub of source code included with the otherwise binary-only software. For RPM, you have one of the scripts cal gcc while you are installing. For IIS, you could even include a small compiler in its' install routine (with that much bloat, who'd notice?) that does essentially the same.
What is source code?
