  6. Re:thick as thieves on Rambus Files Antitrust Suit Against Memory Makers · · Score: 2

I don't think that NForce2 boards are prohibitivley expensive. They come in lower than several high end P4 boards with or without Rambus memeory.

Rambus can't compete with DDR because the total price is too high by comparison. CPU, memmory, and motherboard make any comparible DDR systems cheaper. A P4 with DDR can perform very close to a P4 with Rambus. Add AMD to the equation and except for a hardcore gamer people wouldn't even notice the difference except in their wallets.

Sure it's better technology, but it's not that much better to justify the price difference.

  7. Re:OK think of it as costs on Rambus Files Antitrust Suit Against Memory Makers · · Score: 1

Thats it. The performance did not justify the price premium. Regular DDR was as good as was needed to do anything. It still is. The bang for the buck factor spelled doom for Rambus.

If you look at net profit and total operating budget for any year you care to name, AMD is still "the little guy".

A good AMD motherboard costs about the same as a good P4 MB now days. That makes an AMD system still cheaper.

  16. Re:What are they skomin' out there in Redmond? on Projected 'Average' Longhorn System Is A Whopper · · Score: 1

I agree that M$ is losing it's grip on reality with this proposal.........Unless, by then, there are a raft of games that require similar hardware.

M$ hasn't figured out that the early ninties are over. When we needed to upgrade all hardware substantially for the shift from DOS to the gui. Wordperfect and Lotus 123 ran most offices that used computers. Well, business apps don't drive the computer industry anymore. Games do! Nobody on this planet needs a 3Ghz box to run Office(it aint that bloated yet!), but they want one for Doom or Battlefield!

In three years the chance that any business will upgrade to that level just to pay more M$ tax will be small indeed. With luck most will have switched to a flavor of Linux by then.

  17. I'm glad on AMD Beats Intel in CPU Sales · · Score: 1

I've thought for years that AMD offered more bang for the buck. I've got 2 2000+ boxes now and would not hesitate to go with AMD for my next box. Intels occaisional lead in performance is always overshadowed by the price. I get better performance per dollar from AMD. I use the AMD heatsink/fan and have never had a heat problem with 2 case fans (80mm in and 92mm out), Antec 1600 case.

Anytime the little guy wins a round I cheer.
