Perhaps Slashdot should expand it's horizons as a place to get news and chat about current trends to something a bit more ambitious. Since many websites due either to incorrect configuration, bad design, or lack of bandwidth, seem to crash or not survive being Slashdotted. Perhaps is the time to start giving out Slashdot Awards. Those who survive being Slashdotted should have a placard on their website saying "We have been Slashdot Harddened."
Sony had a Vaio laptop a while ago which really kicked serious butt. I haven't seen any lately, and I work at a Best Buy part time at the tech bench. I see a lot.
I hope that the processor takes off more. It's a wonderful chip. But unfortunately it seems that it'll only maintain a niche position.
I seriously doubt anything substantial will come from the court case. For instance, it has been ruled by US Federal Courts that the Sioux indians have a rightfull claim to the area called South Dakota. It is theirs, by US Treaty the courts have declared. Are they being compensated for it? No.
It has been ruled by US Federal Courts that the Seminole Indians own a majority of Florida. It is also theirs by US Treaty. Are they being compensated for it? No.
It has been ruled by US Federal Courts, and President Clinton himself acknowleged wrongdoing on the part of the US, that Hawaii is owned by the Hawaii Indians, and that the United States annexed it illegally under international law. Are the Hawaiian Indians compensated for it? No.
I could go on but you get the picture.
I doubt that this court case will change anything in the long run. There will possibly be a few people in jail from it, but nothing will change. It hasn't in three centuries why should it now?
I used to work for Gateway computers at one of their repair depots in Irving, TX. They stopped using Airborne Express because one of their drivers forgot to latch the back to his/her truck. I can only imagine what 250+ computers falling out of the back of a cargo truck travelling 70mph on I-635 towards DFW Airport.
Shortly afterwards Gateway started using FedEX, but recently to my surprise I discovered that their back to Airborne Express. I suppose the FedEX pricetag was to high, at least higher than the cost of 250+ computers.
