    This remindes me very much of the 1940's-1950's wich hunt for comunists in our society. The hunt is on for anyone that in any way is even remotely related to MP3. how long before computer manufacturers are sued for producing MP3 compatable hardware? what about RIO and the clone devices? all it will take now is for someone to claim injury, no evedence required and someone will be grabing the pichforks.

    how about creating a virtual cowboy neal (back him up with those phat beats) all he has to say is "fart" and then laugh a lot. Or you could do a Good morning Vietnam thing ala Richard Nixon, where Hemos records a few random coments and everyone else fills in the blank spots.

    Comming from a corporate enviorment where they block most usefull services through the firewall, a lite browser is just the thing. I hate installing a software package and getting a million diferent "features" that I don't use, and just clutters up the landscape.

    I would like to point out that this stuff can still be dangerous even if it's not made into tactical grade nukes. Take a couple of rods, store them in a locker in grand central... instant evacuation=terorist activity. Throw a couple in the county resevoir=3 headed frogs. Put a couple in a bag with some sticks of dynamite..explode.. they will be digging up the soil and burning it for years.

    hey,,.. I never said it was perfect.. we are working with something like the fourth largest tree in the world, 1000+ nodes and I don't know how many OU layers and objects. We just signed an enterprise agreement with MS, and Management is pushing the ADS on us.

    sweet Jesus in heven help us.

    Begin rambling:
    My wife and I have a booth in the art show every year. this year, there seemed to be a proliferation of kids (>20 yrs)wearing camoflauge with parts of motherboards and modems taped all over them. Don't know if it was shadowrun or what... looked stupid. the smell was better this year. New games looked pretty cool... Scooby Doo meets Magic:the gathering. sold a lot of stuff.

    until now, check out Netware 5.0
    "Linux does NOT NEED to be dragged down to the level of a Novell network. It can do everything Novell can do faster and better, except run propietary software that requires a Netware server. That's not software anybody needs.
    Down? Netware is a major networking OS, easy to configure and support remotely, and very stable. With it's widespread acceptance, I would think you want Linux draged UP to Novel's level. If you think it SUCKS, it's probly just the fear of an OS you don't understand.

    Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but MS's next gen active directory services are startlingly similar to NDS and in fact there is a direct migration path between the two. The point of this is.. what chance will a GPL'ed OS have (with less features) when the other "Big Boy" on the block has already co-opted a fix for most of the compatability issues?

    hear hear.
    I am so f**king tired of trying to diagnose rights and printer issues under NT. Netware is far easier, and with the advent of the graphical configuration manager in 5.0, I have no issues with it.

    TV signals are analog and usualy not subject to error correction. data trafic is another beast all together. plus, yes my cable has looked crappy for no good reason on ocasion. With the penny pinching TimeWarner has shown up to now, how far do you think they will segment their network? Not very far if the cost is going to surpass the complaint factor.

    I should add that untill recently I have had ISDN with SBC and their response time and setup for that was flawless. This is a (not) unexpected departure. Ameritec sucks.

    just got off the phone with RR. they will be out in less than two weeks. We do have satalite for television, so they need to charge us $50 a month for the service, but when I divide that out, it ends up prety much even with DSL and the initial instalation charges. As far as the other DSL providers, I could have gone that rout, but all the other providers in the area have to go through SBC for the line, and if any problems arise, I have to call "provider A", they call SBC. SBC "fixes" the problem, never calls "provider A" back. Later I call "provider A", they call SBC to find out what happened, then maybe they call me back blablablalba..........you get the idea.

    True, but the playing field will quickly be leveled when the user base on any segment reaches critical mass and everyone slows down to 56K speeds.. then the bitching will start.. Add to that the inherent security issues that broadband (DSL inclluded) bring up, and it won't be long before the feds step in to regulate these services.

    Would it be posible to sue them for failure to install?? It's been 5 phone calls and I have not even seen a human being yet. With all the agravation I am going through just to GET DSL, I better recieve everything I am paying for. OH and god forbid I have my machine on a network when they show up! then they will charge me 69.95 a month instead of the 39.95 basic rate. never mind if I am not asking them to connect the other machines..................

    Wow, what if the phone company started the same thing. "Your home phone is for personal and entertainment use only" Then they would try to charge you more if you discuss "business" in any way. Imagine trying to sell a car or set up a wedding............

    I would like to point out that Napster is a service connecting other peoples computers together, they are not hosting contene or avocating piracy in any way. Contentvil is hosting material they do not own, charging for it and not giving proper due to the authors.
