  1. What is it about people and technology... on GNU/Linux For Dummies: A Brief Survey · · Score: 3

How many support calls start out like this:

"This is probably REALLY simple but..."
"I'm a complete moron when it comes to these things, so how do I..."
"You'll have to excuse my ignorance but I've never done this before,"
"I just did this the other day and I've already forgotten how, can you tell me how to...."

Now try saying the same thing to a sex therapist.... HAH faaaaantastic!

    I would beg to differ.

...to varying degrees. Some of the cable co's seem to take rather draconian measures in portscanning/enforcing their AUPs.

Rogers@home isn't overly anal (at the moment anyhow) about this sort of thing although the one thing they will portscan and hunt you down for is an open newsfeed. This is in response to the whole usenet @home blackhole fiasco of some time ago. I've noticed that they don't even mind if you have an ftp server up so long as it's not anon access and you don't cause trouble (you would never get an @home rep to say this on record tho so take it for what it's worth).

  8. It's not really censorship... on Online Rights And Real World Censorship? · · Score: 1

It's not like you would be saying "we believe nobody should have the right to look at pornography" by blocking access to certain sites, just be upfront about it. Since minors have access to the machines, certain sites are blocked. I think any reasonable minded person would respect that.

If someone wants to check out www.sluttypants.com, then they are free to do so.... elsewhere.

Certainly some legit sites will get filtered out but this is something you just have to work with as best you can. (How many people will be doing breast cancer research in a laundromat?)

  11. "script kiddie" on David Faure Interview · · Score: 1

a "script kiddie" is someone who uses canned DoSes or exploits written by someone else with no knowledge of their inner workings.

"script kiddies" dont WRITE anything. I keep seeing people on slashdot misuse this term to refer to anyone who does anything malicious and I'm sick of it. Forget the big hacker/cracker debate, don't misuse the term "script kiddie".

  12. But thats exactly the point! on Toolkit Available For WAP programming · · Score: 1

Think of it from the companies point of view: They've already got the public (case in point = you) thinking:

business = cellular, cellular = business

Now one half of that equation is great but the other half is restrictive. What if they could get people thinking "cells are fun, cells are cool, kids like cells, kids want cells!" Keeping in mind that in Finland where Nokia originated, there are more cells than people or some crazy stat like that and in Europe in general a good deal of their traffic is ring tone trading, banner message sending (ie novelty cell features). Now in North America where we seem to be a couple years behind the times when it comes to cell phones and social integration, so what better way to tap into the huge youth market who arent afraid of technology and usually have some amount of expendable income? Why add more games and entertainment features to your phones of course!

You are mistaken sir, there was never a mixture of "all types". Gaming goes thru phases. Or maybe you were sleeping for Contra/midnight resistance/time warriors or r-type/blazing lasers/thunder force/raiden or street fighter 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/mortal kombat or even Super mario/sonic/bonk/bubsy. And sports are nothing new either... blades of steel, track and field, the whole epic olympic games series...

Do I need to go on?

The current push is for huge online multiplayer ventures... bring it on i say! If anything, I am sick of single player games. Sorry, I tired of AI opponents in the 80's, I only get satisfaction from playing real people these days.
