What you need to do is start organizing a union at your company, fast.

We need an international minimum wage and minimum working condition standards. Without that globalization is a death spiral where jobs keep moving to wherever they'll pay less.

When Nixon was President the FBI and CIA were actively engaged in suppressing expressions of political ideas that didn't conform to the Republican party line. Their activities included character assasination, IRS audits, getting people fired and ruining their careers, even blackmail and extortion.
Later, under Reagan, you could be investigated if you participated in organizations (don't try to be smart here - this included Catholic Church activities) trying to stop the wars in Nicaragua or El Salvadore, and these investigations involved agents coming to your workplace and making you look like a criminal in front of your employer.
Now the current administration is hiring people convicted of previous political crimes to run various agencies, including the Total Information Awareness initiative, which involves collecting ALL data about you, including now intercepting e-mail and phone conversations! This agency is run by a man convicted of using his job to engage in political activities any engaging in a cover-up so that Congress wouldn't find out. THIS is who is running this operation, and this should tell you all you need to know about the Administration's intentions!
The Clipper chip was a plan to ENCRYPT communications so that no one could listen in. The government couldn't listen in, without a warrant, and nothing would stop people from using their own encryption if they were concerned about that. Because the Clipper chop was blocked almost NO ONE is using ANY encryption and ANYONE can listen in on phone calls and internet messages.
The Bush plan is to REQUIRE the government to listen in on your messages.

Aspen has a Carbon Release Mitigation Program. They tax new houses that use excess amounts of energy according to how much carbon they are expected to release, and use the money to pay for retrofitting existing buildings, or for alternative energy.
A great way to calculate the cost of the carbon is to use the cost to retrofit buildings so their energy use stops releasing that much carbon, or the cost of installing alternatives that mean that much less carbon is used.
This form of carbon trax tax would be an incentive to reduce the price of alternatives, to conserve, to use less, to retrofit buildings, etc.
So I say TAX ENERGY USE ACCORDING TO EQUIVALENT CARBON RELEASE using this cost formula!
There is a COST to putting carbon into the air. This is the cost of either cleaning it up, or the cost of the consequences. Unfortunately there is no money being set aside to cover these costs, so the cost will build up and fall on people at a later date.
A carbon tax would help a lot. If we were taxed for the amount of carbon we put into the air we would have the cash to clean it up, or the incentive to begin conserving and/or using alternatives.

Companies write drivers for Windows because of its market share. If OEMs had started including BeOS there would be more developers writing software, which would mean there were more people ready to buy BeOS, which would mean companies writing drivers for their hardware.

What in the world are you talking about? Reagan's policies (like Bush's) were massive tax cuts for the rich, leading to budget deficits, in an attempt to force the government to stop spending money on the citizenry. Clinton RAISED taxes on the rich in 1993, leading to budget surpluses.
Not to say that the current administration is not guilty of overreaching their powers, but this clearly extends at least as far back as Clinton.
