I still don't understand why Sony is trying to sue people writing emulators. After all, they loose money on the hardware, so an emulator is a good thing for them... Besides, I really don't believe Piracy can be linked with emulation for the Playstation. After all, you can read "backup" CDs with your Playstation and a little converter.
I have the feeling this is just a kind of bad habit. Sony is being protective because big companies have to be paranoid and sue everything that might infringe on their copyrights.

Hummm, I am surprised you mention the UK since all their dvp is done in the US (like for most US companies). But I have to agree, HP-UX has it's quirks like any OS, but maybe more than your average UNIX. I had a colleague at Ford (in Germany) who once said: "They should not let amateurs like HP make their own UNIX" (he had to switch from DEC Unix to HP-UX because the HP workstations where so much cheaper). I for one, was always happy with HP since their workstation delivered good UNIX performance for just a little more than a PC.
This was till I started working for them. What a joke! I have never seen such a poor service. They probably treat their big customers (like FORD) better than they treat their own employees but I have never seen such a bunch of incompetent people. I left HP (and the country) thinking, I never want to work again for such a bunch of amateurs (it was in France).
On an unrelated note, what you say about Elm does not surprise me... Remember that the STL were made by HP labs in Paolo Alto and that for years C front (their C++ compiler) was not able to handle the STL. Only a few years ago, they switched to aCC and were able to use their own code.
Just of out of interrest, what company are you working for? I worked for Ford and HP and neither of those company would spend 1000 x $60 when they could buy one CD and put it on the network...
And it's not because they have not got money, just because $60000 pound for free software is just not a clever idea. If you try to get Linux installed on many systems, you would probably make your own config and save it? No?
Anyway, concerning their statements, they are marketing stuff...
And one last, thing, for someone who criticizes them so much, you have got lot's of their distribution. Did you buy them all or just downloaded them? Just curious...
Ok, what's your point? It's better to have only installed what you really need? And you would better have nothing on your CD that the possibility (and the default) option of installing too much.
Now honestly, how many sysadmins are stupid enough to install the default configuration? Do you think that even NT admins do that???
Secondly, for your average Linux user, do you think it's more important to have the minimum install or to have many packages more or less tested that you can fiddle with?
Once more I come back to my first point: Ok, you have got many things, you don;t have to install them and if you think that the only install option should be mimimum one then you are probably not the main target for SuSE (and yes, going with debian is probably the best idea).
I am sysadmin and I work with many many unices, including Solaris, HP-Ux, AIX, Linux and QNX, I know which ones I prefer, and I also know the best way to install a package is by doing a./configure ; make ; make install

Where are the big corporations who will buy 1000 CDs for their site? If they do this, that's silly, they could make free copy or even better, make their own install CD customized to their site... why is there no kid porn for auction on ebay, yahoo or whatever. Because for some people (which happen to be the majority), it is wrong so if another country thinks it's wrong (France, Germany) then it is their right to have it the way they want as well as it's Yahoo's right to decide they want to respect that.
Hey, don't get me wrong!
I don't want to push all the history under a rug and pretend it does not exist. That's probably the worst we could do since the only possible fight against it is education.

And ok this be wrong on a "freedom of thought and speech" level but this is not a very good argument since these groups are against even more basic freedoms...
I agree that everybody is more or less racist and was quite surprised to see to which extent people are in the UK (especially in the North). And I thought France was bad...
Anyway, I think you misunderstood my message. I have lived in Germany a few years and I find there attitude towards racism to be both efficient and sensible. And part of it is preventing fachist/racist propaganda in any form.
I mean, it's allowed in Thailand so why can't we buy some good ole kiddies porn videos?
Laws are laws, it's the right for each country to choose what is right or not.
If it is legal to be a racist neo-nazi in the US, I don't see why we should tolerate this in Europe.
As well as the US don't have to accept the laws of Thaliand where a 7 year old can be sold by his familly to a whorehouse...
Look how much the gap is closing... I use to remember times where Alpha was more than 3 times faster than anything Intel would build. They also had the highest clock speed (150Mhz vs. 66Mhz for Intel).
But the situation has changed! The following figures are Spec95_int and Spec95_fp AMD Althon/650Mhz ---> 29.4 - 22.4 Alpha 21264/667Mhz ----> 32.1 - 49.0 So at the same clock speed, Athlon is as fast as Alpha whereas it is half the speed for floating operations. But this is at the same speed. Athlon reaches way higher frequencies so the gap is very small in fp and Alpha is beaten in int. And the price difference is massive. I have got an Alpha server, a Dual ultra-sparc workstation and a whole bunch of PCs, believe me, the speed is about the same for 1/10th of the price.
So you want the P4 to die and be replaced by a IA64? Well, I do hope that the 64bit goodness will be worth the lost Mhz. I know, Mhz is not everything but if you look closely at the performance difference of lets say an Athlon (highest possible clock) and an Alpha (highest clock as well) then you won't see that much of a difference except in the price.
What I mean is that the P4 is going to be clocked over 2Ghz very soon and will probably reach 4Ghz in the next two years. At that time, IA64 will still be trying to reach 1Ghz. IA64 is the biggest flop of Intel so far so I am not too eager to put my hand on it. Besides, the only reason to want 64 bit is to be able to access 2Gb of address space per process. I don't really see this as being necessary right now...
Ok, so if Thailand decide it's ok to sell child pornography (videos or whatever) over the internet, you think that Americans should still be able to see the pictures? And view the items?
But of course, almighty America would not let Thailand do that and would put economic pressure on them... But then I guess it helps to be the "police of the world" and have the implicit right to decide what is right to show and what is not.

Besides, I don't see why it should be difficult to get a car doing a good lap... Remember, computer have got the precision and instant reaction to help them (think ABS, ALS and other gizmos now forbidden in F1).
I don't see why this moderated "funny", I would have said "insightful"... The fact that the third world will catch and pollute as much as the US is scary!

Is that not the case? That's why Gnome was started! Because KDE was not open source because of QT. Read on Gnome's web page: "The GNOME project was born as an effort to create an entirely free desktop environment for free systems."
He uses cheap semantics such as "Gnome is written to the venerable and venerated GTK+, while KDE is written to the technically excellent but politically reviled QT."
What's wrong with that? My understanding is that C is excellent for operating system but that GUI are best done with OO languages... No? As good as the C API can be, it will still take longer to develop a GUI with a C interface than a C++ one (and I know what I am talking about!).
