    the brits tried to train pigeons to peck at pictures of battleships,

    then put the pigeons in glide-bombs with a harness to guide the bomb in the direction being pecked at

    it didn't work.

    I believe in the Gulf War the British point blank refused to be the opposing arm of a US pincer movement, fearing that coming from the other direction in "funny looking tanks" they'd be blown to pieces by their allies.

    Of course going back further my father was on board HMAS Hobart, in the US gunline off vietnam, when an american F4 mistook them for a helicopter(?) and put a missile into them, killing good men.

    And not to get too bitter about it a large chunk of the RAN was sunk at guadalcanal by their american allies (funny looking british built ships).

    These things happen but they seem to happen more when americans have their fingers on the trigger.

    orbital weapons intended to be used against terrestrial targets would be mad to be anything other than ballistic.

    having gone to thr trouble of climbing to the top of the gravity well why not use all that potential energy?

    "Thors hammer" style devices as written about by Larry Niven spring to mind.

    A flying crowbar with minimal guidance systems can come down from orbit literally like the wrath of god.

    but for blasting other stuff in space the speed of lasers would be helpful.

    of course the nuke that powers them upsets some...

    seriously projectiles will always have a place, but as laser tech improves so will they

    there was a good 200 year overlap between the crossbow and the black-powder gun.

    at the start the crossbow would win every time, and by the end it was a curiosity.

    $3,000 a shot is a LOT cheaper than any anti-tank missile.

    not so much worse than an AP artillery round.

    MS has declared war on Sony with the X-box

    anything that weakens MS is now in Sony's interest (as long as it doesn't weaken Sony more)

    widespread acceptance of linux on the desktop would be just fine for Sony

    this is could shoe-horn linux in underneath Windows in a lot of homes.

    I have a linux box, i have a ps2

    my linux box needs replacing in the next 6 months (it's ancient and has mobo issues, i learnt a lot building it but it's had it)

    so for me this deal will kick arse compared to buying new.

    if I want games i can use the ps2 natively.

    and for web / mail / ICQ / a bit of writing the linux kit will be more than adequate.

    and save me a chunk of cash too.

    I bet you there are a LOT of families out there with ps2's who'll leap at this if it's explained properly.

    digital divide and all that.

    it'll make a cheap and adequate computing platform.

    be interesting to see how well it supports printers and scanners.

    RAM is low, but fast, processor is geared up to do visuals.

    the funny thing is that where most less powerful machines struggle with grapical environments these should be fine.

    regular comparisons wouldn't really apply.

    benchmarks would be fascinating.

    it won't outperform a new Athlon

    but it will cost 1/10th

    so price / performance will be sweet!

    since the 96 games (in america), and the upcoming games, in America there have been two other olympiads that may have gone unnoticed (perhaps due to not being held in America?).

    And while I'm sure they had their hairy moments in the back-room the tech side seemed to run OK...

    America is not the ENTIRE world you know.

    they claim to be part of a community

    they got the software (wu-ftpd), which they distribute, gratis,

    I'm sure they've conformed to the letter of the GPL throughout.

    but yes some loyalty is owed to their "competitors" whith which they share the linux codebase.

    previously security updates to this software have been timely and easily applied.

    normally I've applied the patch before the vulnerability is getting publicity.

    perhaps the answer is to make patches available faster, but I don't have direct control over that.

    As others have pointed out RH pushed their patch out the door without consulting with the authors or other maintainers.

    Yay for them, makes me wish I'd used their distro...

    which is what they wanted and to hell with the rest of us.

    yes there are things i can do to rectify it myself now

    but i actually had other things to do today.

    So now I'll be working Sunday.

    those holes don't normally get broadcast on /.

    i don't have any anonymous logins running either

    and *most* of the holes require a login prior to exploit.

    Would have been nice to give the maintainers on a few other distro's time to close the hole before broadcasting this to the script kiddies

    Until 5 mins ago I was a beleiver in complete disclosure,

    But with 6 wu-ftpd boxes to admin I'm not so sure any more.

    Hope I see a fix today.

    This is about C17's and other heavy transports.

    the b52 pegasus launches are old news
