Hmm.. I'm sub'd to linux-kernel and Linus hasn't mentioned a 'release' pre8. There's a testing pre-8 been around for a while./. seems to be very good at predicting kernel releases before they actually happen these days..
Or does someone out there just constantly ftp to ftp.kernel.org and check every few minutes just so they can have a new kernel a few minutes before everyone else? Is that the real reason it got overloaded? Are these the same people that always download the tarball rather than using patch?
It hasn't been deleted (at least if it is the post I think you're talking about). It's been graded "-1" so you need to change the page threshold. This feature has been around for quite a while now, and was discussed ad nauseam before it was implemented, so it shouldn't be news.
If you're talking about the post I found, it doesn't contain the word 'garbage' but I do agree with its rating. And I certainly wouldn't call it a critique.
vga consoles? I guess you mean framebuffer consoles. I imagine people whose machines don't implement any sort of text mode find them quite useful:) And if you have a PC and don't like framebuffer, don't use it..

Time for Linus to exercise his rights and have
the site shutdown, I would say. I *have* looked
at it and it's truly awful.
