  1. civics exam not the answer on Scientists Say People Aren't Smart Enough For Democracy To Flourish · · Score: 1

it is not enough to trust one exam or some courses..... picking a good leader depends on so many things other than book knowledge. People need to be able to recognize strength, leadership abilities, good decision making skills, ethics and morality and much much more.

  2. what if?? on Porn Dominates the Spam Battlefield · · Score: 2, Insightful

hmm, maybe the click rates would be higher if the drug ads offered free porn if you went to their website?

in any case this article is really missing the point - people just don't buy drugs over the internet - duh! drugs from an unknown source can be deadly, whereas porn is harmless and a relatively established internet business.

  4. Arming the Everyone on U.S. Works Up Plans for Using Nuclear Arms · · Score: 1

The slashdot user Dr. Spock's comments on arming Iran, N. Korea, etc, may be twisted ideas, but he does provide a good point: nuclear deterrant only works if two or more nations have the same nuclear capabilities. The fact that the US seems unafraid to use "tactical" nukes indicates that this "deterrant equilibrium" is no longer there. The US is now unafraid to develope more nukes and to threaten the world with the use of those weapons. During the Cold War, nuclear development slowed because of the Soviet/US standoff and because the Soviets made it clear that any US nuclear use would result in immediate retaliation. It seems that now the threat of retaliation is gone.
Everyone worries about terrorists and rogue nations, but we don't realize that terrorists and rogue nations only exist because of the actions that were directly or indirectly supported by the USA. The North Korea situation was improving with the Clinton administration and when Bush came in, the talks between North and South Korea just stopped. Terrorist actions cannot condoned, by why isn't the USA looking at the deep rooted causes of these fanatical groups?
Furthermore, have we forgotten that the US still has the most weapons of mass destruction in the world and spends more money annually on the military than any other country?
This new document just indicates that the US is a warmonger and will ultimately cause a new arms race and possibly endanger the lives of everyone in the entire world.

  5. Problems? on Humans Will Sail To The Stars · · Score: 1

It seems to me that the article was way oversimplified. The city-sized Solar Sail ship they are planning has to be built in space and propelled by a large laser...ummm...question... How do we do that?? Don't we all remember the relatively tiny International Space Station that costed hundreds of billions and is taking more than a decade to complete??
I am wondering what the point of talking about building this giant ship is when it will likely take centuries starting with today's technology to complete and probably cost trillions of dollars? And how about all the problems a ship like that may encounter in space? That ship is hardly controllable (it moves in a set trajectory) and scientists are talking about sending something that expensive out into space BLIND?? Astronomy articles routinely talks how there are lots of things in space we CANNOT see because it is too dark!! Isn't it perhaps more relevant for scientists to perhaps talk about more realizable projects like a solar sail probe to first map out space?
As far as I am concerned, that article was useless and simply qualifies as science fiction. Basically, deep space travel is still very far away and is NOT yet practical with current science and technology.

  6. What the heck??? on Sony To Release New Pet Robot By Year's End · · Score: 4

This product is the epitomy of the ostentatiousness of today's society. Think about it, this AIBO can't do anything and it sells for $2500? For $2500, you can get a very much more useful computer or donate the money to a worthwhile cause. Sure, AIBO is a technological marvel but pratically, it is a piece of rubbish. Are people too lazy to get a real pet and show some responsibility?

  7. What about all the other issues...? on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 1

Every posting mentioned that in order to turn around or get back to Earth, all you have to do is turn off the magnetosphere to ride a gravity field to get back, but if you turn off the field, you are no longer protected from cosmic rays. Also, planets are not right beside each other at any one moment. And plus, isn't the solar wind emitting in all directions outwards from the sun? How would you be able to travel across the solar system then? For example, suppose you are traveling to a planet orbiting at the opposite side of the solar system, wouldn't an additional method of propulsion be needed? Further this article also does not address issues such as how a spacecraft is protected from space debris and how fuel can be replenished for long trips.

  8. ...so many problems... on Geek Profiling: The Next W.A.V.E. · · Score: 1

And with so many problems results in this new WAVE project with which parents and teachers think that they can protect their children from from violence. Let us for a moment disregard the infringements of WAVE on constitutional rights and its ultra conservative stance, but rather focus on whether it is capable of preventing violence. Closely analyzed, most will realize the problem is not solved. Worrying about potential offenders does not answer the question of why certain children may commit crimes. It is analagous to waste disposal: it is a temporary solution. Further, whether WAVE will work is also questionable. Children, as mentioned in the article, can in fact turn in misleading information. In addition, can children be responsible enough to use WAVE? WAVE does not only exploit children, but also the fears of parents and teachers and other members of society. Many of these people already believe that Internet and violent games are the sole causes of child violence. These individuals seem to be led to believe that WAVE will work; they are not told and do not realize the problems involved with WAVE.
