  1. Anonimity as the primary concern on The Tragedy of the Digital Commons · · Score: 1

I don't really thin people don't share files because they are greedy or something... I'd say there are 2 major reasons: 1) people with slow connections... of course they grab whatever they can and then disconnect 2) too much personal information... everything can be traceable back to the IP within a fraction of a second and almost no brain activity... and that affect PRIMARILY those who have permanent IPs and would be willing to contribute 10-15 megz of disk space. Gnutella is therefore not a measurment tool for how greedy people are... it just reflects the state of the net.

just my 2 cents.. a wonderful system, but I am afraid that it suffers from the same drawbacks as linux... lack of hardware support and lack of productivity software... sure it's a beauty to play with... fast, configurable & way ahead of windows... but once you've played with it & start recieving the darned .doc files that you *have to* process, .... you understand that it won't survive in the office.

  3. Stupid comparison on Microsoft Pits Pocket PC Against Palm · · Score: 1

After reading at least half of the posts, I figured out I just had to say something... especially that I had a Palm and a WinCE machine for quite some time... here goes: 1) there is no real way of comparing them, it all depends on how you use them. For people who want to do some *serious* typing a Palm is a bad choice. For those who only need a mobile address booka WinCE3 palmtop is a bad choice too. When will some people understand that you can't compare apples and pears? 2) what's the obcession of trying to fit linux everywhere? do you *really* need a multiuser internet-server-centered device in your pocket to read a text when waiting for a bus? Once again, specialization is the key 3) Most of the battery problems are solved with accumulators... for example, a Sharp 4500 runs real smooth with them, and recharging is not really a problem. By the way, cheaper than to buy AAA batteries every month =) 4) the number of crashes is directly correlated with how you use the machine... I had an almost equal number with a Palm and CE device.. and at least the Wince ability to support PCMCIA without extra external bulky hardware is a big plus when you want extra security for your files 5) sure most people can live without color when browsing contacts... but when you look at the *system* in general, color support is nice. Web-browsing, .JPG watching etc. Sure, people using Lynx will disagree with me, but what the hell

With all respect to the court ruling, I would say it's too early to celebrate. The arguments are as follows: 1) does the verdict means that everyone has to switch to Linux? No, and I strongly believe that there won't be any significant % changes between Linux versus Windows users... small changes, yes, buyt nothing drastic 2) will MS remove the IE from their OSes in the near future, give up HTML costomizations? No, and the same goes for all the tandem MsOffice-IE-IIS 3) there is no *ultimate* OS. For instance, I can't switch to Linux no matter how much I'd like to. Linux is great for programming, 3D-design, stats (just as examples) are all Mac and Win-based. Will that change in the near future? Not likely (please skip the Wine-related flames... it won't run SPSS or Bryce. And minesweeper doesn't count) 4) people who run servers, do programming or need clusters of 'puters to run soft will probably continue with Linux. People who don't need multiple simultaneous logins, UNIX-style security and permissions are likely to remain in the windows world. After all, you use bulldozers to move ground and a BMW to go to work. Distribution of tasks, see? 5) sure MS is full of unnecessary things like ActiveDesktop... but gee I wish I could cut&paste from Netscape into StarOffice 6) finally, it will take YEARS before MS will be split up... so they aren't dead yet =) I don't like MS, and I am not ready to die for Linux on every desktop. Every task has its own tool. Ruining the beauties of Linux to make it understandable to every secretary is not the goal, isn't it? Go ahead, flame me. I got a PhD to finish... by tomorrow

Stimulants? A person who sometimes reads Slashdot got to have a firm belief that everything, with the exception of MS, is a technologically-solvable problem. So come on, think *real* broad... like... TAPE IT! Just my 2cents, in case you might need them to get yourself a spare tape to follow this highly technical solution... oh... almost forgot... you know.. the RECORD button is the one which usually is of a different color since v1.3 came out =)

  6. Re:Anxiously waiting ? on Netscape 6 · · Score: 1

If you are trying to make some predictions here, you should not base them on lines of code alone... try throwin in something like the line length (the smaller the better), years of development (the bigger the better), and so on... plus the boss' IQ of course (that's what makes the formula return *very* small values for any MS soft =)
