And another thing: If you are so concerned about helping the poor in Third World countries, (and you obviously don't live in one, you arrogant asshole, or you wouldn't be posting this shit here), you wouldn't be sitting in front of the glow of your monitor all day typing up this elaborate flamebait to post on /., you would be out in the fields, providing vaccinations to migrant worker's children, or building a house for a poor family, or SOMETHING. Get a life.

After all, there are probably all sorts of ways to communicate over distances that we just aren't advanced enough to know about, let alone implement.

Also, why would they be naive enough to think that any alien race that was stupid to broadcast news of its existence would still be worth contacting when we invented the means to? Do they really think that all alien life is non-destructive?

Oh wait... we've been polluting the airwaves for almost a century and actively launching probes like Voyager to initiate contact...

I guess I didn't make my point clear. What I meant was: it is harder to root several machines than it is to root just one machine. If something pretty exploitable like BIND or sendmail is running on the same machine as your firewall, then your firewall gets taken down at the same time that BIND or sendmail gets exploited, so instead of having a problem with one service, not only is your security gone, but so are two or three other services.

I don't know about professional graphics programs, but high-end games take up a lot of system resources. Games like Quake III, for instance. It has come to the point, actually, where even the fastest processors can't keep up with requests from the graphics card. You must remember that for us gamers, a few frames per second matter a whole hell of a lot (that, and low network latency :-).

Of course, I have to speculate that the inherent crappiness of the I/O on x86 is gonna catch up with us sometime on the graphics front.

Yes, except that just about every game is NOT multi-threaded (with the notable exception of Quake III Arena), and therefore can't take advantage of more than one processor. And don't even get me started on trying SMP with Windows 98. Also, it would cost you more than $300 for a dual 550 setup, because SMP motherboards cost much more than single processor motherboards.

Just remember, 2 * 550Mhz processors != 1.1Ghz of processing power for most games and other common applications. Although many people on eBay would like to tell you different.

I use programs like Napster and Gnutella heavily to aquire Mp3s of bands that I either like (as in I own some of their other work) or that I have heard good things about. This has acutally led me to buy more albums overall, despite me having a burner. Why? Because I like bands with intense levels of bass guitar, such as Rancid and NoMeansNo. With Mp3s (IMHO), you just can't even approach the quality of CD music, even on high-bitrate Mp3s, but you get an idea of how good the song is. There is a world of difference between listening to "Roots Radicals" on CD (awesome) as opposed to Mp3 (slightly tinny).

That, and I like the cover art, and I like supporting good bands.
