i'm on slashdot, on firefox, theres absolutely zero delay. theres none in chrome either, for sure, but theres none in firefox.
then i can open all the crap i want, firefox memory usages stays very low.. not so much for chrome. chrome uses a bunch of memory.

and that's what most people experience, actually, not just me. So i'm quit surprised every time someone blame firefox on memory usage or unexpected extreme slowdowns nowadays.

on windows however its a different story. its neck in neck with firefox, at least, it feels so. Except firefox doesnt have any of the shortcoming you list, uses less memory, and feels plain right

That's not the point. I've been an Apple user too, "back in the days". The system has never been as open as Linux for sure, but you could tinker and it was *clean* and working good.
Imagine a Linux system today, that is as polished as OSX, including *all* tinkering tools. That would be what Apple felt like before (of course, there was no open source, etc at the time). And no, OSX + darwin under it doesn't cut it anymore of course. It would, 10 years ago.

I'm not sure how you're going to fit the iPad in your pocket either, since you want to replace your iPhone's web browsing and e-mailing by that.

well thats nice and all but the iPad doesn't fit what you listed either.

actually i'd go further and just say:

    - i don't need a tablet pc

if i need to work on stuff, i need a laptop, small, light, powerfull, complex. that's not what a tablet is for, that's what a laptop is for

if i need to check mails quickly, take a pic, phone, look at a website for some info, etc.. i need something that fit in my pocket. that's what smartphones are for. granted, they could be better.

so.. the tablet pc is for leaving around at home, when you wanna take a pick at your mail, website, check a recipe, whatever and don't feel like starting your computer (or waking it up, or just having to sit in front of it), and the phone isn't all that big thus not all that easy to use.

besides, while you're pointing out the tablet doesn't do a lot and thus is simple.. you still need to update it. you need to clean it. you need to configure it, yada yda. just another 3rd device to take of basically.

and $600 on top of that, no thanks!
