  2. Re:Why not use VMWare? on Wine Runs Word 2000 And Excel 2000 · · Score: 2

VMWare doesn't allow hardware accelerated graphics. So, if you have a voodoo X and want to run a game like Baldur's Gate II....you cannot! I would love to use VMWare IF it had support for things like OpenGL and stuff.....my real reason for Windows is games. And WINE is making excellent progress in that department....games are currently just running slow. But, that can be fixed....at least they 'run'.

  3. Paranoid? on Zero-Knowledge Open-Sources Linux Client · · Score: 1

Perhaps I am just paranoid, but why do I need to make a device (in /dev) for this to work? Maybe it is just me....usually is :-)

What are your takes on this?

  4. Quick Outline of how it works on "Spooky" Quantum Data Encryption · · Score: 2

Quantum Cryptography is a little 'spooky', that much I agree to, but this is generally how the system works. You send your encrypted text over public and, otherwise, easy to intercept communication lines. The real secret or 'thing to preserve' is the key, which resides in the 'specially reserved and completely seperate' quantum line. This line does NOT emit different levels of radiation for 1's or 0's, so the TEMPEST attack will not work and if anyone other than Alice and Bob are reading the message, the line automatically 'shuts off'. (Note: This encryption works off the OTP principle) The quantum line doesn't have to be synced with anything so a disruption only means a delay in transmition of the key. Anyway...there is alot more to this story than submitted here...check out below. Some excellent material on the subject can be found at http://people.bu.edu/AlexSerg, he recently gave a lecture about Photon Entangled States here at BU for the IEEE; I'm sure you'll find his research quite helpful! He knows the material much better than I :-) David Gervais dgervais@bu.edu

  5. Optical Drives on The End Of The Road For Magnetic Hard Drives? · · Score: 2

Magnetic Drives have been predicted to fade out long ago. Ever since the late 80's with the optical drives that held ~2gigs, magnetic hd companies struggled against the beliefs of the physicist. Engineers developed newer ways of making magnetic media more efficient, while the optical theories were more effective in the long run, the drive for magnetic media was more prominent, as were the funds. Lets face it....how many people own magnetic media as opposed to optical media. In the hardware industry, if there is funding and money, there is progress. MORAL: Support the optical media foundations around you. They will give you terabytes to loose files instead of gigabytes :-)
