  1. Not the First on America's First Eco-City: Doomed From the Start · · Score: 1

Sorry, but the first one was Arcosanti, in central AZ. Also a failure.

  2. sick on Edward Snowden Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize · · Score: 1

I sick and twisted idea. But after the award to Obama, it would be difficult to sink much lower.

  3. Surface on Microsoft Slashes Prices On Surface · · Score: 1

Sounds like MS did not show enough of the "feel good" commercials, with young adults clicking and jumping about. Ha, maybe a few commercials on how well the machine worked as a computer would have been more advised. As is typical with MS, they are selling style over substance. And to boot, they give us Win8.

  4. Re:Simple explanation on Discovering NSA Code Names Via LinkedIn · · Score: 1

A vs AN, amazing what rabbit holes discussion groups can wander into. No different than saying THAT when THE would be more appropriate.

  5. Re:We are ALL mathematicians on Math and Science Popular With Students Until They Realize They're Hard · · Score: 1

Ha! Watch the typical register operator at a fast food joint if required to make change without looking at the register. Blank looks, call the manager, who isn't any better. Zero math skills.

  6. If you interviewed at my company, and I asked you a question, if your answer was " I need my computer or calculator," you would be shown the door.

  7. Actor politics on Orson Scott Card Pleads 'Tolerance' For Ender's Game Movie · · Score: 1

If our decision to see a movie was influenced by the politics of actors, most of us right thinking people would never never see a movie. Liberals are once again demonstrating their hypocracy on tolerance.

How tasty is the MS Kool-Aid?

  9. MS Can't Get Anything Right on Critical Security Updates Coming To Windows XP, 8, RT & Server · · Score: 1

How old is XP? 12 years? And MS is still patching bugs. Incredible! Imagine flying on a commercial aircraft with software by MS. There would be crashes everyday. MS does only enough testing to make the product run, then relies on consumers to find the bugs. They should b sued.

  10. Re:data sample question on Scientists Explain Why Chairman of House Committee On Science Is Wrong · · Score: 1

There are multiple papers showing the effects of greenhouse gasses, sun load, and other activities, such as volcanoes. These papers separate each contribution so one can see how much each contributes. The CO2 contribution is on a steady climb, the sun and natural contributions fluctuate.

  11. Re:data sample question on Scientists Explain Why Chairman of House Committee On Science Is Wrong · · Score: 1

You can't quote facts to politicians, they will only use what information furthers their own political life. Likewise, you can't use facts with a climate denier.

  12. Hire Tony, kneecap the guy. Seriously, sue, sue, sue.

  13. 30 days? on Chinese Firm Approved To Raise World's Tallest Building In 90 Days · · Score: 1

What is the definition of "build?" The modules are pre-built elsewhere, and this takes longer than 30 days. Also, how much finishing work needs to be done after the building is topped off? But if they succeed, it will still be impressive.

  14. Stability on Mozilla Plans Major Design Overhaul With Firefox 25 Release In October · · Score: 1

Every time FF tweaks with a new version number, it becomes unstable until the add-ons are updated by the developers. Why? I have disabled the auto update feature because I don't need crashes, several times a day. I need stability, not features. And I can't wait until a few years from now, when we will be on version 1866. Stupid!

  15. How I learned on How Did You Learn How To Program? · · Score: 1

Programming was part of a numerical analysis course. FORTRAN, punch own cards, submit, then pick up a day later. Later BASIC, as part of a summer job assingment.

  16. Si Fi looks at this issue on Rice Professor Predicts Humans Out of Work In 30 Years · · Score: 1

A common theme in si-fi novels. And seldom in a positive light.

  17. LightSquared on Congress Wants Federal Government To Sell 1755-1780 MHz Spectrum Band · · Score: 1

Remember the flap last year over Lightsquared wanting to use a space comms band, for terrestrial service. The band is next to the GPS frequencies, would have made GPS essentially useless. And we all know how much we use GPS for everything from finding your way to Grandma's house to landing airplanes. Fortunately, the application was denied (just barely), but the threats to frequencies will continue, if we do not stay vigilant.

  18. Re:they shouldnt have been on it in the first plac on Congress Wants Federal Government To Sell 1755-1780 MHz Spectrum Band · · Score: 1

Some people don't capitalize anything, just as they use silly acronyms or shortcuts instead of full words. Wait a few years, you won't recognize English, nor be able to communicate with your kids.

  19. Allocations on Congress Wants Federal Government To Sell 1755-1780 MHz Spectrum Band · · Score: 1

Which is more important: Military using 1755-1780 MHz to protect the country, or allowing a teenager to text 50 times a day to her friends? I vote for the military, or at least until the bad guys all go away.

  21. Re:Sine waves on Music By Natural Selection · · Score: 1

Has anyone considered wavelets? Using sine waves to approximate a function assume the function is periodic, not truncated. Which allows Fourier Series to represent the function. Fourier transforms avoid some, but not all of this issue, it has been too many years since college for me to fully state the differences! But wavelets have a finite life. They might do a better job of representing music.
