  1. yeah there was this thing called the Cold War on Lunar Base Foe Romney Endorsed By Lunar Base Supporters · · Score: 1

the true effect of propaganda can be seen in the thousands of people on sites like slashdot who think that we entered the space race to fulfill some kind of technological utopian adventurous spirit of the human existential quandry alone in the universe.

we went to the moon to beat the soviet union, i.e., the commies. that was the only reason congress agreed to fund it. the only reason the soviets had a space program was because their leaders thought it was the only way to compete militarily with the US (stick nukes on rockets).

the entire space program was based around theoretical war with an enemy state.

now, communism is no longer the enemy - its our special friend that produces shiny gadgets we write code for, in huge factories we'd rather not think about, unless we work at Goldman Sachs and our job is to think about how much money they are making.

the entire buildup of aerospace in the United States in the 20th century was due to one, and only one, factor. The Cold War. Without the Soviet Union, there would be no Apollo Mission, there would be no Mercury program, there would be no Space Shuttle. The entire thing was a gigantic nuclear brinksmanship contest between two gigantic countries who narrowly missed blowing each other to bits in a holocaust.

And what of the Soviets? If they had no Cold War they wouldn't have been into space either. Korolev would never have gotten funding from the Politburo unless he had claimed (dubiously) that he could stick nukes on top of his space rockets (err.. i mean missiles comrade, of course).

its one thing to be a neutral admin. but lets compare youtube and wikipedia for a moment.

on wikipedia, if you see copyright violations, you can take them down yourself. or, you can report them to a specialized group on wiki that actually cares about removing copyrighted content that was uploaded without permission of the copyright holder. they also have a system to verify whether or not works have been granted permission, and whether they are in public domain, by a large amount of research done with licensing and legal systems around the world.

now, lets take youtube. its full of people just uploading music albums and putting a still photo as their 'video'. now, the only person who can ever report that as a copyright vio is the artist themselves. nevermind you could probably listen to their music for free on bandcamp or something. . . youtube is not going to provide a link to bandcamp. youtube just does not give a shit.
