  1. Military Training? on Studies Say Video Games Increase Violent Behavior · · Score: 2

Having read the posts explaining that the studies are not saying violent games leads to violent activity, and the posts saying that it is the job of parents to make sure the restraint and peaceful responses to real life are ingrained, it strikes me that a fantastic example of this is the training of the US Military.

Marines, Seals, Rangers, regular infantry, they all train to be lethal in battle. They train, (using the Marine Doom post example) so that they don't have the think in battle, they can just respond. Much like opponents say "victims" of violent media are reacting.

In the First World War, the percentage of troops who actually fired their weapons was very low. This was an accepted problem. Normal people don't want to shoot other people, so the US (and I'm sure most contries) changed their programs so that their soldiers WOULD shoot their weapons in combat. By Vietnam, the percent of soldiers who fired their weapons in combat situations was very high, approaching 100%. If you think this wasn't because the training desensitized them to violence and trained them repetativly how to kill, you are deluding yourself. The point is, the programs ALSO taught the soldiers to respect life.

And the programs continue to do so today. The US Military knows that when they train their soldiers to kill, they also have to train them to know WHEN to kill. Some soldiers HAVE gone on and killed people, but no one questions their training, they were accepted to be not quite right in the head (the same way anyone else who resorts to murder is) The difference here is that violent games are used as replacement parents instead of being a sideshow to family life. And the parents, individuals whom studies have recently identified as major influences in what children decide later in life (hence the "talk to your children about drugs, they'll listen" campaigns) aren't there to balance the violence with explainations about why it isn't the way to solve a real world problem (in general)

Maybe we should learn a lesson from the military.

  2. DVD Update? on Updated: Phantom Menace DVD Release · · Score: 1

That update appears to be several days old. The only visible Star Wars DVD link on the main page says that they have info from LucasFilm saying it will indeed be released. Also the discussion of Lucas' supposed call in to a radio station to confirm the rumor. I don't know if anyone knows for a fact it was him, but it seems Ain't-it-Cool isn't currently saying what people think they are saying, though it does say that the release date is unknown. 3. Re:About Mr. Kossovsky (sp?) on eBay For Patents? · · Score: 1

Mr. Kossovsky has been in trouble with the federal government(the FDA mostly) for his work in the field of Silicon Gel Breast implants (SBIs). Used as a witness for the thousands of women who were complaining of side effects from SBIs that don't exist. His junk science, which could easily be completed before the real science (which takes quite a long time) was enough to destroy companies (the settlements put DOW Corning into bankruptcy). I found it very iteresting that the article didn't mention any of his involvement in the SBI mayhem or even his work in the field, as his last company was set up to sell kits to detect the "Anti-silicon Antibody" He argued that there was an anti-immune response from the BIs which came from the silicon acting as an adjuvant. It seems that Kossovsky is far more interested in making money than he is in helping people. His "research" related science has been put aside to push his claims and make a buck out of mass hysteria when it suits him, this would not be my choice of someone to do business with.

  4. The new Terms on Meeting With Netpliance · · Score: 1

The new terms of ownership modify the contract so that internet service must be started within 30 days and be continued for 90. There is also a clause which says the purchaser accepts that the terms of the agreement may change. Does this mean that anyone who has gotten and hacked this thing must activate the service within 30 days of the change or face the $499 penalty charge? I can see quite a few angry people discovering $499 charges on their credit cards if this is the case.
