We would never tolerate a foreign gov dictating our education policy, but there's the arrogance of the USA again...meanwhile, the religious right is waging a war on common sense trying to say my children should be taught "science" based on the notion that all science is evil...while using modern communications based on tech using theoretical and mathematical work done by the very scientists they deride as crackpots. Education *is* a public duty of society, and education must be based on learning factual information. Maybe they want our country back in the dark ages, but we don't have the right to demand the Germans be forced to return to the days when the earth was flat and people were burned at the stake for witchcraft.
Much as I have no use for twitter, I applaud any entity willing to stand up for the freedoms we claimed to have defended...until it came down to appeasing a police state. Since the only use the Chinese gov seems to have for the internet is attacking everybody else's networks and spreading their propaganda, why not just cut them off entirely from the rest of the internet until they agree to change...and since it's cyberwar they're waging, make it verifiable, like any other arms treaty. Let Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and all the rest who sold out pay the cost of the effort.
I live in a location where dialup or broadband are the only options, so I end up using gmail as a trade-off for the higher bandwidth (my account comes with no grounded email). So as not all accounts of the type are "losers", I agree that the post is dead on. There's a reason there have been (for ages) some things you can not do with a non-grounded email account. Or a P.O. box address...
Old quote (forget who): "You can't con an honest person." Only a moron thinking he can get something for nothing actually jumps at spam emails. Should we ban all email, have the postal carrier "preview" our mail, and have the phone company screen our calls?
Telemarketers get to talk to my phone as it sits on the table all alone...junk mail gets tossed...and emails I have no use for are deleted.
Clueless end users sending me a spam email I will ignore is nothing. Their being one of the army of drones in a bot web is my point of contention. Next topic, please...

You can lead a jackass to water, but you can't make him think. People have chosen to be ignorant as long as there have been people.
