Conspiracy is not a thought crime. Conspiracy consists of planning and usualy preparation, most often involving several individuals. It's one thing for you to think "I want to kill George Bush", it's quite another if you go up to your friends and say "hey guys, I bought this here rifle...who wants to be my spotter when I go assassinate the president?".
Actually, if you bought the rifle after you said those words (or one of your friends laughed it off and bought a spotting scope 6 weeks later), you're only a overzealous prosecutor and a jury full o'tards away from a conspiracy conviction.
For the thousandth fucking time, that bill only applies to non-citizens!
The cool thing about the bill, is that if you are awaiting determination, it doesn't apply. So if someone never actually checks to see if you've been properly detained as an enemy combatant, you're still quite fucked.
`(e)(1) No court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider an application for a writ of habeas corpus filed by or on behalf of an alien detained by the United States who has been determined by the United States to have been properly detained as an enemy combatant or is awaiting such determination.
`(2) Except as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3) of section 1005(e) of the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 (10 U.S.C. 801 note), no court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider any other action against the United States or its agents relating to any aspect of the detention, transfer, treatment, trial, or conditions of confinement of an alien who is or was detained by the United States and has been determined by the United States to have been properly detained as an enemy combatant or is awaiting such determination.'.
Dear god, fuck yes. Vista didn't fix the "explorer hangs for a few seconds when you drag a file over a shortcut that points to a disconnected network share" thing either (drag onto is also still retarded). It's "cool" to see the desktop ice up. *sigh*
By default, windows actually "fly in" to view. EVERY SINGLE WINDOW. You will be annoyed after 30 seconds.
Although I eventually tossed my vista install, I didn't really mind that. I think it worked really well to hide the time it took for a window to open - something that was really obvious if you dropped it into that "classic mode that looked retarded because it was half windows 95 gui, half vista (mostly buttons)". It also gave the user feedback that something was happening and even made the open folder, etc, process feel a lot faster than it actually was. You have the same thing on OSX with the genie animation , which doesn't imho work as well. When I dropped back to 2k3 server, I had a "damn, this is much faster" moment. I was running on a 7800gt too, so..
I'm looking forward to the comparison reviews in the major mainstream publications. Bah, doubt that you'll get what you expect. Microsoft's PR department will toss dollar bills at the reviewers and you'll get the usual tripe / reprinted press release that passes for journalism in the computer industry these days. Look how quick they got a number of people to play the part of the apologist with the Vista EULA thing. There was some damn spectacular spin done there, especially by some of the guys who write for the bigger windows oriented mags. Take a look at Paul Thurrot's article for a great example how you can confuse people into thinking how a significant eula change was just a "clarification".
The sidebar was stupid and slow but voice recognition in RC1 was worse by an order of magnitude. Vista would sort of finish booting, allowing you to open a firefox window or something and then, out of nowhere, VR would start, leaving firefox stuck on the start page, apps refused to load, etc. 20 seconds later, you'd be started up, but man was that annoying.

I can see this as being grounds for a chargeback and the more people who get pissed at this and file chargebacks with their credit card companies, along with BBB complaints, the better.
Chargebacks are quite hostile towards the merchant.
Enough chargebacks will get their merchant account pulled (and if youe account it pulled, you are automatically blacklisted) and significant fines will be levied against them by the credit card companies.
If 10,000 people filed chargebacks in a two week period, EA would certainly sit up and notice.
India has seen the end of a caste system Maybe officially, but I know a whole lot of people would call bullshit on that.
and has moved into a knowledge-based economy. Sort of. Aside from a very small minority of extremely intelligent and motivated people who are doing some damn impressive work, most indians don't work in a knowledge based economy. Unless you count reading from a script... And those are the lucky ones. There are still lots of farmers....
Their poor are becoming literate, and taking "our" IT jobs. Their "poor" are in villages in very remote areas where not even the Army dares to enter because it is controlled by warlords and they get massacred every time they go in (look it up). These are the same places where you hear of village elders who sentence the offender's daughter to be gang raped, wives being burned alive, etc. Yes, there are a good number of educated Indians, however keep in mind that India also has a lot of people. A whole lot of those people live in some pretty shitty places and don't even have power 24 hours a day.
The prospects for the average Indian are getting better as the days go on. Maybe, but they still have a ways to go.
Well, I really, really hate the "heater that hasn't been used for 6 months" smell, so that was sort of my primary focus. That makes it a little better... right? Please?
... to start heating your house with your computers;)
I actually installed boinc with seti on several of my machines last night and it worked quite well to heat part of the house (us Canadians need to turn the heater on earlier). Took a bit of time to get started, but it was nice and toasty in the morning.
Does anyone know if this method is less efficient in generating heat than using a apace heater? Slower perhaps... If you're going to use energy by turning on the wall heater anyways, why not use it to crunch some numbers?
Or biggest. Any why not? Sure, they've had problems, but overall, the service is much more reliable than buying games on cds that are sometimes defective or missing cd keys because employees stole them - to say nothing of the good old days of floppy disks.
I've activated xp and 2k3 server well over a dozen times each and the indian has just asked me "is this the only computer you have it on" and has given me the key.
Yeah, and the law books are filled with cases where someone has sued because some 6th grader wrote "Mrs. Jekyll is a lesbian" on a note that gets passed around. Oh, wait...
All torrents are blocked in the portland state university dorms - well, not blocked per se, but it is QoSed to oblivion. I did an experiment a while back and even over 10 days, I was not able to finish downloading a 150mb file. Sure, technically it isn't blocked, but with no exceptions, it isn't usable.
Then again, the dorms clearly aren't a priority for the networking folks, it is common to experience 3-4 hour long periods of 800+ms latency A DAY in the dorms, which makes pretty much everything besides browsing the web impossible.
When I'm in a pissy mood, I play a game which is called "convince the employee that 911 is a valid nxx". Yeah, probably not a good idea, especially if they sell the list, but I am sort of an asshole.
The thing about "minimum wage plus 5%" retail jobs is that intelligent people quickly realize that pretending to be a retard works really well for making people go away. Actually putting effort into your job isn't rewarded and you'll probably get shitty shifts and eventually be forced to leave because the "$7.50/hr and doesn't get paid overtime manager" sees you as a threat.
The "how stupid is this person" and "how much bullshit can I spout until he stops nodding his head" games are also amusing if you're a bit twisted and really hate working there. If people came in with the attitude that all the employees were retarded, our IQs would drop by 60 points in the time it took to put on a retard face and blink several times.
Needless to say, I only worked retail for a short time before it was soul crushing (and the pay was dismal), but I sometimes still feel a little guilty that I was such an asshole.
When Poland was under the iron curtain, you would get bonuses for having children and if you had 7 (IIRC), the government supported you completely - neither parent would have to work. The rationale behind this is they needed soldiers to fight (and factory workers, etc) and were trying to increase the population with these subsidies.
rentacoder.com might be another place to look... Lots of "set up a website for me so I can scam people out of money by selling penis enlargement pills" listings, but there are some interesting things there too.

"Max" (yes, they gave it a name) is Sony's condescending, annoying and buggy voice menu system.
If you yell "agent" at it long enough, it should route you through.

You uhh, got a video for that?
Or E3 before it sold a hundred thousand tickets at $300 each or whatever. It will be back, if for only that reason alone.
