  1. Re:Birthdays on Ask Slashdot: Companies That Force Employees To Join Social Networks? · · Score: 1

As I understand it, all major social networks operating in the United States collect date of birth to be COPPA compliant.

How are they going to check it? The social network is not going to access your company's HR department to verify it. Use a different date and have a ready explanation if it somehow gets caught. My sister and I were born in the same month and I use the day of her birthday and year of mine all the time. Oops.

A better solution is to buy a real Tablet PC (not a girly man "tablet" like the iPad)

I'm honestly unable to understand what you mean by this phrase and parenthetical explanation. What is a "real Tablet PC" capable of that an iPad is not?

I have a distinct feeling you're speaking from ignorance (rather than just outright trolling) but I am curious if there is a difference you (or others) care to share.

Well, for this thread, the obvious answer is that a "real Tablet PC" will run Microsoft Office and an iPad will not. While I don't see a need for Office on an iPad, it would be nice to have viewers for Office documents and OneNote for the iPad and Android tablets.

You needed a CB radio, something you could not use for anything else. Most CB's were installed in cars. Base units cost more, as did hand held models. Buying a model for a car and using it in the home? Possible, but not for the average person. Twitter? All you need is a phone or a computer -- something many people already have. The "entry" into Twitter is cheaper/easier, which is why it might be more widespread, but I think the comparison is valid.

Or they can buy MS Office cheap. Under the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP), I picked up Office 2010 for $20. I've never installed it, but at the HUP price figured if I ever needed to install it, it was worth picking up a copy.

I'm pretty sure any stand for the iPad would work for the Nook Color, as well.

The Nook Color comes in a box that can be used as a stand. Flip it open and it clicks into place and is designed to hold the Nook Color, at an angle, in portrait mode. It was clearly design that way, yet they don't publicize it very well.
