Microsoft should just keep pushing good stability features for their crappy OS. Every single OS release is an "oh we got this new x and that new y (both available in other decent OS for ages, except for the occasional innovation)" moment, instead of a "We have increased security and enabled you to fully control your computer. If you are not a computer expert, this OS is great, as it always has been, but if you are a computer expert, then now we have given you the ability to fully manipulate your computer" kind of thing. That's what Windows should do -- add powerusers to their marketshare (I mean real powerusers). Also, it isn't FLOSS (I just had to troll:D)
build = compiling in this context, as in most of the world. But actually, I have a large set of software that I use and wrote (battery reader, volume manager, keypad listener, simple file browser, network manager).
Many have just said no and given valid arguments. I support them. These ultrareligious bastards and morons who call themselves "scientists" disgust me -- and they are bad for science. I am against organized religion and an atheist, but I fully understand religion and I am not against it in itself (nor am I against it within science) -- what I am against is stupidity, and this is just plain stupid.
Here's some of your science. Man is clay and clay is yay, wuppy now come a flood and store them all in a big large room. Bah.
I've left desktop managers altogether. They were so full of crap -- even the light ones. I admit many of them are great for some people, but I just build my Linux desktop from the ground up, with every single component being thought out -- it runs, because I told it to run.
It's not about money! A logical diagram will also show that, while Free Software is bound to affect profit, it does not imply that a company earn no profit. That's just the old thinking of people who don't think logically. "Oh look at me, I have an example, but I don't produce deductive arguments or possible counter-counter-arguments, I am so good!".
Then quit using false facts. That dark rhetoric only eats up idiots. Statistics are all around us, rest my case. Shall not argue anymore -- as you ruin yourself with those other languages (some of which I am also very fond of), I'll bring myself to a shining shine of a shine.
Point me to benchmarks. Or, better yet, instead of arguing with the subjective concept of speed, show me benchmarks of it against other applications and affect the results with variables such as code readability, code maintainability, code freedom (=danger of falling at the hands of Oracle, Microsoft, etc), code portability (if needed for said project). Then we can talk. Until then, I'll make my money by following C++ -- which seems to be fast and reliable enough to be used nearly everywhere along with C.
Most people just don't get it. If we start to turn C++ into one of those languages that are better for some particular situations, it'll lose its speed and its reliability. Heck, with constant changes some Operating System programmers already turn only to C beause they claim "compiler X sucks at C++". I like all these C++ changes because they almost map directly to machine code -- they're almost always just syntax-based changes, with no direct implication in the way structures are stored and interpreted. If we add those things we'll have to start adding other layers to C++, eventually turning it into some sort of interpreted language or Java-like language and I don't want that. If you don't like C++ then don't you use, just don't appeal to dumbing it down from its purpose -- to fit every purpose!
Like I said, most people I know use blogs that link to rapidhsare megaupload and other websites. It is much faster for them, easier and, they claim, safe.
Yes, that's right, I prefer C++ syntax and coding style. Efficient, does exactly what I tell it to and makes sense in my head. All this Python/Ruby etc just makes my head blow up. I often code in those languages and I see them as very useful (and easy to work with), but I still prefer C++ syntax.
I actually think there are good alternatives all you said, but some times the proprietary counterpart is better, albeit Windows-centric (or, as a friend would say: lus3r-ce3ntr1c)...
To me, the problem lies in intrinsic properties of the FOSS community, which has too much negative inner conflict.
That's not what I said. I said that I'm used to gradually losing features for software that I paid. Valve does it -- W98 scandal, meaningless updates that I can't undo, CSS scandal etc etc etc.
This whole lengthy thread focuses on some examples. Particularly, the Windows 98 pseudo-scandal (or the CSS update if you will, since they both changed the entire content of a game that was paid for without ways of going back -- in one situation the content changed to "unplayable"!).
Yes, agreed. I've left Ubuntu for Gentoo, and now I finally feel the power going through my hands. To customize everything. To build my operating system. To be the tools themselves. Me and my Gentoo, we are one -- no one to beat.
ASCII graphics man! A pixel THAT BIG is all we need. He'd also implement "refreshing" as just clearing the screen. Ah, I can see it already...Ha Ha Ha. Nice catch;)
I be flaming.
:D)

Exactly. Microsoft is Evil, remember. Wait, wasn't that a lie?

Hahahah! People trusting Microsoft! Boy have things gone crazy!

BS.

goatsie. Yeeeeeee -- wait, that's in wordpress! Holly cow, that means you are SO INTO GOATSIES YOU BLOG THEM!!
Please, leave these idiotic beliefs out of this. Believe in it yourself, but don't use it as an excuse for something scientifically proven.
I face the fact. However, since I run a unix-based system, I showed my sadness.
Microsoft make baby jorl cry...

And it runs natively in decent Unixy systems! Oh wait...

Yes I forgot to add the thread, silly me: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1999586&cid=35255566

"And they may gradually strip out features people have already paid for and do all manner of slimey underhanded stuff"
That's just like what Valve and Microsoft do. Some people are already used to that lowlife.
Get Gentoo and build it from the ground. It Just Works.

Yes, yes it is! Suckers just don't get how to RUN applications, they think that they can "RUN" the Internet...
