So, I suppose that would mean we might all end up paying for the right to print to a printer since it will one day be a service on a Windows XP machine.

No way, no how. The costs of the COBOL dinosaurs printing alone would send the managment in my shop screaming for an alternative. In a way I wish it would happen, we'd be a Linux shop overnight.

  10. Re:SGI Intel/linux on SGI 750 Itanium Server · · Score: 1

While there are fair number of SGI folks that will likely show up and start posting, I think where they are headed is fairly clear.

SGI, in white papers and trade shows, is pushing the statistic that "the average SGI customer is doubling storage capacity every 18 months" according to Kent Koeninger in "CXFS: A Clustered SAN Filesystem for SGI". Think about the consequences of that for a moment.

The future does not lend itself to XFS on the server but rather CXFS. Sure they are betting the bank on their multi-OS approach but they do have the customer data to back it up. It seems like a good bet, all things considered. XFS is a bridge to IRIX and CXFS, nothing more.

BTW, the opening CXFS paper is here.

  22. Good, Bad, Ugly. on Tech Support: Sucking Even More · · Score: 1

There are companies out there that go the extra mile in delivering a quality solution. The two most recent examples that come to my mind are Vividata and Sangoma. Vividata assisted with tuning PostShop to crank out TIFFs an impressive speed that was well beyond it's marketing promises. Sangoma brought out early a very interesting way to run PPP over HDLC using using Linux (this was a year and half ago). Support was stellar and immediate. Not to mention fun being the lunatic fringe.

There are so-so companies out there as well. Pixel translations, Install Shield, and Sun come to mind as OK support. All of them seem to push out support issues on the technicalities.

The worst of the breed are the vendors that won't give you the time of day. The worst of the worst is Kofax. Find a salesman, buy bulk units, purchase support, and they will tell you that you have to buy X toolkit to ask that question. Arrgggghhh! I get angry just thinking about them. Too bad they are almost a monopoly!

A lot of the time I don't think it has much to do with cost. Some of the worst vendors for support have been the most costly.

I think part of the problem is some people expect support to solve all their problems including integration and deployment issues. I cannot stand it when people sit idle waiting for tech support from some vendor to solve their problems for them. It ain't gonna happen if you don't work with them actively. If you haven't read the docs, applied the patches, and RTFM'd get off the freakin' phone lines.

I cannot resist comment on this as well.

Extortionate service contracts are now routinely offered -- special arrangements by which people who spend thousands of dollars on hardware and software spend hundreds more just for "priority access" to get the kind of minimal support that's standard in other businesses, and that ought to be included free with their purchases.

I am sure the vendors offering such contracts would be willing to roll the costs into the product itself. I for one am glad that I don't have to pay for support for all of the clueless "technicians" of the world.

Lastly check out this website, it has nothing to do with the topic but I could use more visitors.

  23. RTFC on GNU and the General Public Employment Contract? · · Score: 1

I hate whining about how unfair contracts are from people who don't bother to negotiate. Do your homework, read your contract, and if you don't like it; don't sign it! It's that simple.

Rather than simply write off these people as being stupid for signing one-sided contracts, could we do something to pursuade managers to be more open to free software development?

I have a better idea. Read-the-friendly-contract. If you are all fired up to save people from themselves, convince them not to sign contracts giving away their right to create software!

These people are stupid for signing one sided contracts. It's a workers market out there and giving up your rights on your own time is stupid. Plain and simple. Read up on it and do your homework!

It is not that hard to negotiate a contract that leaves you free to persue your own interests. With it comes the satisfaction of telling those obnoxious bastards who want you to sign your life away to pound sand.

What if there was a standard contract available, between employers and employees, that spefically gave employees the right to contribute to free software projects so long as it benefits the company they work for?"

There are standard contracts available that protect developers rights. Start with Nolo, from there you can give whatever you like to the FSF.
