rm on a symbolic link removes the link, not the file the link points to, so doing this -- assuming even the hosting service is Unix based and provides shell access -- won't do anything to them.

I think you have to go back farther than Quake... (though I don't know for sure about Quake) but Doom was compiled using Watcom C. That made the port to QNX a lot easier, as Watcom is the standard compiler for QNX 4.
Actually it is France that has laws to keep the language pure, and government branch that does this. In Quebec, there are language laws as well, but they slanted towards making sure that French is used rather than towards what is French.
