  1. The thing record companies fail to see on Diamond will provide anti-piracy software for Rio · · Score: 1

Unless you have copy-protection compliance end-to-end (original distribution, all means of transfer, and all players supporting the protection scheme), you have no protection at all. Granted, if someone wants to offers songs with limited playability, they could encrypt it using the Diamond software but there is still nothing stopping a person from ripping a CD and making it available to people in the regular MP3 format. I don't see how this will curb piracy so maybe I'm missing something here...

  2. A new form of crack (no, not the drug) on Ask Slashdot: Banner Ads in "Free" Software? · · Score: 1

If the software offers a use that equals or outweighs the annoyance of some advertising, then they'll do just fine. This one will be decided by the public. I don't see why anyone should have a problem with such a method of generating revenues, it's not forced on you (you don't *have* to use the software), it's not tricking you into veiwing banners, and it's not spam (yay!). But(!) you can bet your ass if this comes out you'll see a new breed of cracks coming out that circumvent the ads. I wonder what the legal situation/ramifications of *that* would be...

  3. It's just an indication. on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

For the first time in history one generation is overtaking, not succeeding, the older generation. This new generation of minds is caught between the knowledge and power that it comfortably and deftly wields and the guidance and experience it desperately needs but doesn't always get. People ask how these kids could have built up an arsenal under their parents/teachers noses but is it really that big of a surprise? These aren't the clueless kids of 50 years ago who couldn't keep a straight face when lying to their parents. When regarding technology, how many times have you seen the roles of teacher and student reversed; the children trying to teach the adults the trivial aspects of a "simple" technology that comes natural to the child. With such a perversion of roles playing out more and more is it really a surprise that other social structures are starting to show signs of stress?

  4. Sort of an aside (read: killing RIAA) on Customizable Parallel Port MP3 Decoder · · Score: 2

While reading what the product was, I had a thought: What if soundcards started offering hardware MP3 com/dec as standard so that using MP3 audio would be more appealing in apps (read: games) where CPU usage is precious to begin with? I know there were a few 3D game engines that supported MP3 for background music and I know the now defunct crack.com 3D game was using MP3 for it's music. Probably wouldn't happen, but if it did catch on, it would be one more nail in the coffin for record companies.

  5. Scrabling to remain relevant on NSI sells registrant info. Again. · · Score: 1

In thier inept attempts to remain relevant to the internet they have managed to begin alienating themselves from their lifeblood. This is a rather greedy move (legal? yes. right? no.) that follows up the ballsy move of redirecting registrant traffic to their own site. By scrambling to remain relevant, they may have managed to do just the opposite.

  6. Here's a nice banner! on Microsoft demands http://linux.de removes slogan · · Score: 1

I've had a banner along those same lines up for a LONG time on my web page, and the no-fun gang from Redmond haven't said anything.

Well maybe it's because you're site isn't all that big or noticable. Hahahahaa...

  7. privacy? on Wireless "Pulse" Technology · · Score: 1

Anyone else distrubed by the thought of "hand-held radar that police can use to see inside a room before bursting in"?

Well, nevermind that. I'll have to get a whole new radar detector to avoid getting speeding tickets. Shit! It will be interesting to see how feasable it would be to interfere/block the transmissions even if they can't easily be listened to.

  9. re-inventing the minidisc on IBM and Mp3 · · Score: 1

One problem there: the minidisc is all but "mini" when compared to the size of IBM's drive. Also keep in mind that the minidisc still requires hardware to use it (motor, read/write head, etc.), whereas IBM's drive is that small size *including* all mechanical parts.

  10. 46% on Playing Hooky to Watch Star Wars · · Score: 1

Hmmm.... keep in mind that 46% of the *total* population is employed, not 46% of *adults*. If you consider children and the rapidly growing retired demographic, there's not a lot of people left in the middle. The employment rate is actually a lot better than 46%.
