You know, more and more I keep catching myself thinking that slashdot could save bandwidth and time by simply having the homepage redirect to the second or third page of Digg.
Someone should write it. Just for the snickering (and occasional guffaw) it will generate. I've been thinking about making a fart, find and replace tool, for a while too.
I was expecting to read the same thing, but if you look down near the bottom:
Sony denied these allegations. "The CD will probably cause a system to crash, but it will not alter anything," the spokeswoman said. "And it won't eject properly, but that's just because the computer has crashed."
So, if one were to assume the quote is really from a Sony rep. then there may be something to this (or the rep. was completely computer illiterate and made a huge PR blunder).
What they are doing is sucking up available download connections with very slow downloads. A lot of new software is starting to support kicking connections that fall below a predetermined limit (a la xDCC scripts of yore) so this won't work for long.
Win32 ported gcc that has all the win32 headers and compiles win32 native binaries that don't require additional DLLs to run anywhere (like Cygwin).
Also makes it easy to compile linux/unix sources on win32 with ususally slight modifications (esp. socket code) but not as easy as Cygwin is for porting.
One of the ways Akamai uses to see if cached content needs to be updated is to fingerprint the content (HTML/gif/jpg/etc.) with an MD5 hash. They even supply a server filter that modifies the content URL to reference that MD5 fingerprint so that as soon as the content changes the Akamai servers see a new fingerprint in the request and know that it's time to refresh it's cache.
Despite the telco strike, I got my line up and running rather quickly with them. They also kept me informed at every step of the process, which is rare. The other good thing about my service is that I get usenet feeds from www.usenetserver.com and one or two other decent/fast services through speakeasy.
One thing out of their control is the telco and DSL provider. Covad handles my area and were great; it was the telco (big surprise) that caused the only hiccup in the whole process. It just proves more and more that the telcos don't understand the new expectations from customers and about supplying these new technologies.
Can I still say that someone has "balls of steel" if I mean it in a good way and I append (R) to it? How would I pronounce (R) when I say "balls of steel"?
Apogee also lists "Bombshell", the universal radiation symbol, and "Prey" as trademarked. That's interesting...
The first batch of PSXs that came out had a lot of problems with heat, reading certain games, and skipping during FMV. I preordered mine and was one of the lucky few to not have a problem with the first batch (still have it) but most people had to wait a week or two for a new, working batch to be sent out. I hope the same happens again...
I suppose you thought he meant PERL, which didn't turn up until much later (1985 or so?). Give the guy some credit, people do make spelling mistakes, but it's the facts which are important. Maybe you should check yours before criticising next time.
Hate to tell you but you should check out some facts too. The site even states that it was written in perl (as if there were any doubt).
Actually, you can edit the HOSTS file by hand (it's only text). In Win95/98 it's located at C:\<WINDIR>\HOSTS and in NT it's c:\<WINDIR>\SYSTEM\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS The format is: ###.###.###.### hostname Read hosts.sam in the directory if you're stuck.
While it's cool that storage technology is getting so much better, it still doesn't completely help when that sea data has to pass through a straw. I'm hoping that advances in bus technology and communications will jump ahead in the near future to meet the requirements for pushing such data.
If the new Nintendo console comes out with DVD player support for a decent price, it might make Sony backtrack on their plan to offer DVD movie capabilties only with an add-on. That would be nice, I hate to buy peripherals for consoles, it kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a single unit that provides everything in one neat package.
I don't see a problem with software rendering if the game is optimized and the hardware can handle it. I tested quake2 in 800x600 software and got 28fps and 19fps in 1024x768...

OT but what did your sig bunny originally look like before the line limit maimed him?
Ok, but what about:
$> man fart

Frozen airline poo. You can all stop thinking about it now.

Did they try unleashing a toddler on it or spill coffee on it during a time critical job? Didn't see a mention of that, and with good reason...
OK, how long before something like this turns to sex?

Maybe slashdot should look into changing over to this language. It sounds kinda cool...
Forget knowing why my system crashed, I just want my BSOD. They better have someone working on bringing that to Linux...
If you don't have enough change, whip out your compressed air can and chill the sensor...
